Stanford rallies to beat UCLA for ninth straight time
The Cardinal serve as the Bruins’ proverbial glass ceiling, the one barrier preventing them from a chance at true greatness in what has largely been a successful run under head coach Jim Mora.
“Ryan Burns did not play a great game”, said Stanford coach David Shaw.
That final minute of the ball game was not a fun stretch for the bookmakers but certainly caused jubilation for the public.
UCLA received a needed confidence boost in its ability to stop the run last week against Brigham Young, holding the Cougars to 23 yards rushing. Stanford has won the time-of-possession battle in 18 of its last 22 games. 3.
After struggling on offense for 3 1/2 quarters at the Rose Bowl, Stanford put together a 70-yard winning drive capped by Burns’ fade to Arcega-Whiteside, who got one foot inbounds on an acrobatic play. But Burns rallied with the help of Trenton Irwin and Arcega-Whiteside, who each made hard catches on the drive. “He’s dynamic, he’s elusive, he’s tough to tackle, he’s got great physical and mental toughness, he’s intelligent and the thing I appreciate most about Christian is the way that he competes”. The Cardinal are led by a stout defense and do-everything running back Christian McCaffrey, who has gained at least 200 all-purpose yards in eight straight games.
Some UCLA players attempt to portray Saturday night’s game as just another evening at the Rose Bowl. “You can’t trust the quarterback’s eyes”, Shaw said. Still, Stanford went scoreless in the final frame against the Trojans, allowing the visitors the slightest glimmer of hope.

In front of a national audience, at home in primetime against a top-10 team, which has been a nemesis to your program for nearly a decade, UCLA needs to come out hot, aggressive and attack the cardinal from the beginning. He added 167 yards and one touchdown passing.
“Burns was not pulled”, said Shaw.
Owusu was shaken up on the play and did not play the rest of the game.
UCLA managed to take a 10-3 lead by halftime, and the defense held the Cardinal offense to just two field goals throughout most of the second half.
Stanford marched 50 yards on 10 plays on its first drive of the game, before settling for a 37-yard field goal by Conrad Ukropina. Solomon Thomas picked up a fumble after a sack and ran it back for 42 yards. Corner back Randal Goforth has already nabbed two interceptions but Stanford probably wont throw the ball very much anyways.
UCLA responded on its ensuing drive. He is coming off his eighth 300-yard passing game against BYU, leaving him just three shy of Cade McNown’s school record.
Rosen passed for 248 yards for the Bruins (2-2, 0-1).
