Orgeron: Coaching LSU ‘a dream,’ offense will be ‘tweaked’
Miles – who was 114-34 in 12 seasons as LSU’s coach, including a 62-28 record in the Southeastern Conference – was sacked Sunday along with offensive coordinator Cam Cameron.
LSU athletic director Joe Alleva introduced Orgeron at a press conference Monday, one day after longtime coach Les Miles was sacked following a 2-2 start.
Les Miles was sacked into his 12th season with the team, after failing to make a BCS or New Year’s day bowl in four years, winning only nine SEC games over the last two seasons, and failing to beat Alabama since 2011.
LSU athletic director Joe Alleva made the announcement Sunday, saying Miles has done a “tremendous job” and been a “great ambassador” for LSU, but that “it’s apparent in evaluating the program through the first month of the season that a change has to be made”.
“I’m sad to see Coach Miles go, but on Monday the sun rose again and we’ve got a good Missouri team to play”, said sophomore guard William Clapp, who plays the position Miles manned at MI in the 1970s.
Miles ends his career at LSU with a record of 114-34, 7-4 in bowl games, and one national championship (2007). “Just watching the energy in Tiger Stadium and having been an opponent in that stadium and understanding the intimidation of the Tiger family, we’re going to bring that back”. “We’re going to do what we do and play very physical and fast”.
Orgeron said practices will be shortened, and meeting time will be increased.
Orgeron has promised change on offense. That’s assuming LSU recognizes it’s going take big money to attract a top-shelf coach. Right now it’s defensive line coach Ed Orgeron, who was promoted to interim head coach. He left the Cowboys for LSU, clearing the way for Mike Gundy – his offensive coordinator at OSU – to move into the head coaching job.
Cameron’s offense ranked 110th in scoring offense at 21 points per game, 111th in total offense at 339.5 yards per game and 119th in passing offense at 112.0 yards per game.
Orgeron said he’s also elevated defensive coordinator Dave Aranda to associate head coach.
Oakland’s JaCoby Stevens says he’s sticking with his commitment to LSU for now. “He just had us all relaxed and let us go play ball”. I was coaching the receivers and quarterbacks, and I don’t know anything about it. “Be more creative. Find ways the quarterback can get the ball down the field”. Orgeron’s a good coach, he proved that as an interim coach at USC, but the answer is no. LSU’s shot at an SEC championship looks dead in the water and it’s highly unlikely that Orgeron, no matter the proposed changes on offense, significantly improves those chances. “Just being more of a head coach, game manager and everything that goes with it”.
This Saturday LSU will host Missouri for homecoming.
Opening up the field and adding a variety of new calls will keep defenses guessing, rather than the consistent lack of variety and innovation that we have seen for years.
Though it’s the last thing he wants to talk about, if not think about, Larry Fedora is on every one of the lists I saw.
Late Monday, Alleva broke his silence and was blunt about the most important characteristic his next head coach needs to have.
Notre Dame has already fired defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder, but Irish head coach Brian Kelly’s seat may still be hot for a massively disappointed national fan base. “They’re a good football them, and Kevin did a great job for us when he was here”.
“The biggest difference is I’m not going to be in that film room for 20 hours a day”, Malzahn said.
