Newberry: Cowboys refuse to panic with Prescott at helm
Dez Bryant could be joining Tony Romo on the sidelines again, just like a year ago when Dallas slid from first place to last in the NFC East without the two offensive stars. These two teams are trending in opposite directions, but will square off Sunday afternoon in San Francisco.
This classic rivalry doesn’t hold as much intensity as it did in the 1980s and 1990s, but this Week 4 game for both the 49ers and the Cowboys is of great importance. But the veteran quarterback picked a poor time to revert to his old form, throwing short of the sticks to Torrey Smith on a fourth and six to sink the 49ers’ comeback. But, a lot of pressure will be placed upon Prescott as he will be without Dez Bryant for the next few games.
However, neither passer has been able to lead Chicago to victory; the Bears are 0-3 to start the 2016 season.
The Cowboys marched, too, but they finished their drive with a 1-yard Ezekiel Elliot touchdown run, taking a 21-17 lead with 1:08 left in the third quarter.
It will be interesting to see how the Cowboys respond as they may have to dig deeper than ever before to pull out a win in what is seemingly a trap game.
Cowboys rookie quarterback Dak Prescott, who has turned heads with the impressive start to his National Football League career, said today the 49ers expressed little interest in him prior to the draft.
Bryant missed seven games last season, the first five after breaking his right foot in the opener. “And I’m just ready to get back on that field whenever that time is”. NaVorro Bowman was carted off the field with a non-contact injury and some have speculated it could be an Achilles injury.
Gabbert’s passes included two to Garrett Celek for 13 and 25 yards and two to Jeremy Kerley for 17 yards and a 33-yard touchdown.
THIRD DOWNS: After failing to convert their first 10 third-down chances last week against Seattle, the Niners were quite efficient at the start this week. “Nobody lost any sleep, everything was good and we’re moving on to San Francisco”, said Bryant.
The Cowboys were quick out of the blocks last week, playing at home at the AT&T Stadium against the lowly Chicago Bears.
The wide receiver has faith in his teammates to get the job done against the 49ers without him if he can’t go.
Also supporting Kaepernick’s protest were Antoine Bethea, Keith Reaser, Rashard Robinson and Jaquiski Tartt, who raised their right fists for the second consecutive week.
