CL: Dortmund’s Andre Schuerrle scores late to hold Real Madrid to draw
Champions League football is always overloaded with the promise of abundantly quality football, and Borussia Dortmund vs Real Madrid was the biggest fixture of this second Champions League matchday.
Raphael Varane restored Real’s advantage in the second half but substitute Schurrle’s late strike three minutes from time saw both sides share the spoils in an evenly contested encounter.
“The players played a great match, the result is a hard one to accept because we deserved a bit more, but it is not a bad result”, Zidane told reporters.
Keylor Navas made a good stop from Gonzalo Castro’s free-kick, while Ousmane Dembele twice fired over the bar. “We can certainly play better, but sometimes such games are also good, such results sometimes shake you awake”, he added.
Germany winger Schuerrle came off the bench to rescue Dortmund’s unbeaten record against Real at their Signal Iduna Park stadium.
It’s the third game [drawn] in a row and I’m pissed off for the players because they don’t deserve this. “That will help the team to grow together”.
But wait, is there hope for the reigning Champions League champions?
We.we might’ve gotten a little bit carried away.
Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring for Real in 17 minutes but Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang levelled in 43 following an error from keeper Keylor Navas.
Elsewhere, Tottenham’s Champions League campaign is up and running after Son Heung-min scored his fifth goal in as many games to snatch a 1-0 win over CSKA Moscow.
The Real manager was happy with his side’s performance, but admitted a third successive draw was a disappointing result. After a goal-less first half, they surrendered a goal lead to the Portuguese outfit and were destined for defeat. James Rodriguez played the ball forward to Gareth Bale on the right before the Welshman’s back-heel across goal set up Ronaldo to fire home first-time.
The La Liga side has dropped three and drawn the next two.
“I needed a game like that”.
In the other game in the section, first-half goals by Bryan Ruiz and Bas Dost gave Sporting a 2-0 victory against Legia Warsaw in Portugal.
