South Korea Picks New Site for US Missile Defense System
China and Russian Federation remain opposed to Thaad as they believe it will destabilise the region, with Beijing considering economic retaliation if South Korea deploys the missile shield.
What does it mean?
South Korea’s military plans to invest more than $390 million in sonar technology for destroyers in order to deter North Korean submarines.
North Korea is developing submersible craft at various locations. Rather, such punitive attempts are escalating tensions in the Korean Peninsula. This prompted the USA and South Korea to look elsewhere and the golf course is said to be the “final” decision.
A South Korean military official who spoke under the condition of anonymity said the soldier was unarmed and there was no exchange of fire during the crossing. “We go where the evidence takes us”, Fried said.
“China has made clear its stance on several occasions with regard to THAAD”, China’s foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said in a regular press briefing.
South Korea has moved its planned site for an American anti-missile system to prime land now occupied by a country club and golf course, as Seoul’s defense ministry revealed its “final” choice Friday.
A Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course in South Korea was picked Friday as the new site for a United States missile system aimed at defending the country from any North Korean attack. But opposition to the new site emerged immediately.
The system’s deployment has drawn rebukes from China, North Korea’s surrogate, according to Bloomberg.
Chinese officials have objected to placing THAAD in the region, saying the system’s radar has the capability to spy into its territory.
China on Friday urged the United States and the Republic of Korea (ROK) to halt the deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD).
The chosen golf course is still close to Seongju but is almost 700 meters above sea level and further from residents. The golf course is valued at over 90 million USA dollars, and the government will have to gain parliamentary approval for such a large budget outlay.
In its analysis Friday, 38 North said a large circular component seen in imagery from September 24 suggests North Korea could be building a submarine larger than its current experimental vessel that is being developed for missile launches.
A military expert told NK News in a previous interview the golf course’s built-in infrastructure makes it the most likely candidates among the newer proposals.
Gimcheon mayor has reportedly refused to meet military officials visiting the city for explanations about the site change.
