Barrett sets record, Ohio State blows out Rutgers 58-0
Indiana’s upset of Michigan State in overtime Saturday raised some eyebrows among college football pundits around the country, but it wasn’t a huge stunner for Ohio State players who know the Hoosiers as a tough out the past few years.
All 10 of Rutgers drives ended in junior Michael Cintron punting the ball back to Ohio State, while the hosts scored on everyone of its 11 drives except for the first – which ended in an interception from senior safety Anthony Cioffi – and the last, a turnover on downs after the Buckeyes went for it on fourth down inside the Knights’ 20. “All 22 on both sides of the ball, we didn’t play very good”. Ohio State scored on its next six possessions, as an impotent Rutgers offense couldn’t keep its own struggling defense off the field.
But that wasn’t the whole story.
(13) Baylor 45, Iowa State 42: In Ames, Iowa, Chris Callahan made a 19-yard field goal as time expired to lift Baylor past Iowa State. Unfortunately for Michigan State, things don’t get all that much easier with a solid BYU squad coming to town. In the second frame, the quarterback hooked up with another of his pass catchers. Sophomore Terry McLaurin had the first touchdown catch of his career.
Coach Urban Meyer said this time a week ago that outside linebacker Dante Booker, who started the opener before suffering a knee sprain, was probable for the Rutgers game only to amend that at midweek.
Meyer said H-back Curtis Samuel did a great job of working his tail off even though he wasn’t given a starting position immediately. But Victor entered the game in the first half. The perfection of his passing only continued the befuddling that the Scarlet Knights began to experience…and to the credit of the OSU offensive line they had their way as well – opening holes the size of a barn door. “We saw all of what we saw on film all week and we just were well prepared for them”. I’m going with Washington, but Houston could have a great case if Oklahoma and Louisville finish the season strong. “It shows up on Saturdays”.
The Wolverines (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten) beat a top-10 opponent for the first time since a Rich Rodriguez-coached team rallied to beat the ninth-ranked Badgers in 2008. His 49-yard run in the first quarter last Saturday was a career long. “Indiana is not a team to look past because they give us trouble every year”. “I’m going to use that”.
“Our nine guys, assistant coaches, just keep getting these guys better”.
In the first game of the year, redshirt freshman wide receiver K.J. “Very efficient player. That’s what I love about him”.
“They smothered us”, he said. Redshirt junior quarterback J.T. Barrett is looking to add to his career passing touchdowns record that now sits at 59, and has the opportunity to break the program record for total touchdowns responsible for, sitting just four shy of Braxton Miller’s record.
With his third touchdown of the day, Barrett broke Bob Hoying’s school record of 57 career touchdowns.
“I’m not really a record guy”. Because I know that’s a unique deal.
“It’s just a great honor”, Barrett said of the school record for touchdown passes.
Rutgers wore white helmets with a block R during its 58-0 beatdown by the second-ranked Buckeyes at Ohio Stadium.
Ohio State, which is the only team in the country to not allow a rushing touchdown, posted its first shutout since September 12, 2015, against Hawaii.
Harris was supposed to be the middle man on a flea-flicker play, but the 2016 Big Ten leader in stolen bases last spring committed the football equivalent of a fielding error and throwing error on the same play.
