Washington beats Oregon 70-21 to snap 12-game losing streak
In that game, Huskies quarterback Jake Browning accounted for eight touchdowns against OR, a Pac 12 record and a performance a quarterback can only dream about as a high school preparatory product.
The Ducks did secure a commitment from ESPN 300 athlete Jaylon Redd just two days after the loss to Colorado in late September, but that was the first commitment since mid-July, as the Ducks went almost two months without a pledge and now have 12 total commits, good for seventh in the conference.
OR coach Mark Helfrich was questioned during the week as reports surfaced that he would start true freshman Justin Herbert at quarterback against No. 5 Washington. They haven’t had a losing season in 12 years. “It’s been awhile coming about this game”. Khalfani Muhammad ran for 165 yards and a touchdown while Tre Watson had 134 yards and two touchdowns.
Browning’s eight touchdowns matched the Pac-12 single-game record. The Husky ground attack was led by sophomore Myles Gaskin who gashed the Ducks for 197 yards.
“Certainly there are guys at this point in the season that aren’t doing necessarily everything that we want them to do, and that’s the case if your record is flipped or you’re undefeated”.
The last time Washington defeated OR (2-4), R. Kelly was searching for a key to stick into his “Ignition” (2003). “He can be a little more vocal, but he is a great player and I think he will be a really good quarterback for us in the future”. “Got a really good start, and now there’s no hiding from anybody. Guys are starting to show up – (Ross) and (Dante) made tremendous catches a couple of times and that’s what you have to have to keep moving chains and to have something special happen”.
For the second time this season, the Huskies scored in the first two minutes of a game in which they did not receive the opening kickoff, Browning capping a 30-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run after Budda Baker intercepted OR quarterback Justin Herbert on the Ducks’ first offensive play. And the Ducks got it back with 1:59 to play after a quick UW three-and-out, seemingly poised to try to make it a game.
Browning already ranks fifth on the Washington career list of touchdown passes with 39.
On the Huskies’ next offensive drive, they went 67 yards in 10 plays as Browning hit WR John Ross for a short three-yard touchdown pass to put the Huskies up 14-0.
It was 21-0 after the first quarter, so very Oregon-like.
OSU showed the Ducks to be soft on defense, and that was the case again last season when OR slumped to 9-4 while finishing 116th in the nation in yards allowed per game (480) and 114th in points allowed (a school-record 36.8). Entering Saturday’s action, he had managed 100 yards rushing in just one contest.
Herbert’s interception led to a score for Washington while OR struggled to get itself on the board the first two quarters. That gave the Huskies their 70, a figure that will be hard for the Ducks to reconcile. Rose also scored on a 15-yard pass from Browning as the Huskies built a 28-0 lead. MI not only hung 78 points on Rutgers, but also held their offense to 39 total yards and 2 first downs. Williams got both of his running TDs in the second half and had 245 yards passing for the game.
MI ran the ball particularly well with 9 of their 11 touchdowns coming on the ground.
The local boy completed 21-of-34 passes for 179 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.
KEY INJURY: Oregon was without senior receiver Dwayne Stanford with an undisclosed injury.
Before the game, there was some musing in the press box that the absence of Chico McClatcher – the Huskies’ second-leading receiver – might hamstring Washington’s ability to move the ball.
The Huskies didn’t just end their 12-game losing streak to the Ducks, they did it with a 70-21 trouncing where the Huskies looked like the Ducks used to and the Ducks looked like the Huskies used to during that dominating streak by Oregon.
