Beckham keeps cool, gets 1st touchdown catch in Giants loss
He opted not to challenge, called his final timeout at the 2:30 mark, and most unusually said of the sequence: “Didn’t see anything that would make me want to challenge”. We just have to keep it up.
The Packers offense got off to another good start against the Giants. But Manning’s recent struggles, combined with poor play from the offensive line and a slew of drive-killing penalties, have been discouraging for a team with what appeared to be a legitimate chance to win the NFC East title. The defensive line is playing so well that that the MVP quarterback is taking notice. Beckham (five receptions, 56 yards, one touchdown), who even made peace with the kicking net, did not implode against the Packers.
Victor Cruz was shutout without a reception and Sterling Shepard had just two catches for 14 yards.
Granted, the defensive unit upped their game towards the end of the contest, and weren’t helped by Eli Manning’s mis-firing offence, but the Giants are going to find themselves in a hole early in most games if their D-line can’t improve.
Three weeks ago, the New York Giants were flying pretty high when they were at 2-0.
“We feel good about the yardage and the third-down percentage (9 of 19), but we’d like to score a few more points there to help our defense out when they’re playing so well”, Rodgers said. “I thought our defense played very well”.
McAdoo said it was important to “win the line of scrimmage”, but the rookie head coach was vague when asked if veteran tackle Will Beatty might get a chance to replace Flowers, who is in the midst of a sophomore slump.
Instead of challenging the play, Ben McAdoo just called timeout.
Randall Cobb was the Packers’ most consistent receiver with nine catches for 108 yards. Running back James Starks fumbled on a second-down catch but recovered. Eddie ran hard, broke a lot of tackles, (and the) pass protection was excellent, particularly in the action passing game – a number of opportunities to hold the ball (and) throw the ball downfield.
All the Eagles (3-1) needed was a field goal to stay unbeaten, but Wentz went deep on the next snap to Nelson Agholor, and Slay intercepted him with 77 seconds left, Wentz’s first turnover of his National Football League career. First, it was Lacy plowing through the Giants for a gain of 31.
The drive: Four plays, 5 yards, 1:15. Crosby kicked a 44-yard field goal with 3 seconds left to give Green Bay a 17-6 lead.
Then came another big swing.
Against the Packers, who were missing both of their starting cornerbacks, Manning only threw for 199 yards and a fourth quarter touchdown when the game was all but over.
In the first half, the Ravens failed on a fake field goal attempt on fourth-and-12 from the Washington 17 when kicker Justin Tucker got off a lousy pass that fell incomplete. Rashad Jennings is still questionable. But for a team coming off its bye week against a squad coming off a short week from a Monday night game in Minneapolis, it wouldn’t have been unreasonable to expect a more impressive showing, especially on offense.
Long runs and rushing first downs for NY were in short supply.
This week, the Giants lost cornerback Eli Apple to a groin injury after he made his return from a hamstring. It averaged a 27th-ranked 27:44 entering the game.
Of all the problems the Giants thought they would have this season, a shaky Manning wasn’t among them. DRC’s effort received praise from McAdoo, according to the New York Post on October 10, 2016. This is the first time in 2016 that a quarterback didn’t burn the Packers secondary for at least 260 yards.
Manning seems to be panicking at the first hint of pressure and he is much less effective once he starts to move around the pocket.
