Packers show they can dominate line of scrimmage vs Giants
The Giants failed to move the ball on their opening drive, and Green Bay appeared to go up by 14-0 when Rodgers threw 21 yards to Randall Cobb in the end zone on a quick post pattern, but offsetting penalties negated the play.
Not only did the New York Giants wide receiver end his career-long five-game touchdown drought, but he also made nice with the kicking net.
He notched his second sack of the season against the New York Giants when he hauled down quarterback Eli Manning and, on the same play, forced a fumble.
After producing his first 100-yard game since Week Two of the 2015 season, Cobb had a much-needed breakout game against the Giants on Sunday.
Green Bay was able to score on their first drive of the game, with Aaron Rodgers connecting with Jordy Nelson.
The Packers offense got off to another good start against the Giants.
The Giants pass rush was invisible, Rodgers’ pocket clean all evening.
Green Bay held NY to just 43 yards on the ground on 15 carries, as the Bobby Rainey and Orleans Darkwa tandem didn’t instill serious fear into the Packers’ defense. The cornerback had two first half interceptions, part of a night where he also added a tackle as the Packers simply stopped throwing towards him. Manning struggled for the second consecutive week as the Giants scored just one touchdown and lost their third straight game.
The Giants (2-3) looked out of sorts until a hurry-up drive that ended with Beckham’s 8-yard touchdown catch with 2:54 left.
Key plays: Janoris Jenkins intercepted Rodgers and returned it 3 yards to the Green Bay 40. After Green Bay’s three-and-out brought out some boo-birds, Manning had tight end Will Tye wide open for a 61-yard touchdown but he couldn’t make the catch. He didn’t have a stellar night (23 of 45 for 259 yards, 2 touchdown passes and 2 picks) by any means.
Asked after the game if that confidence remains, McAdoo said: “I still do”. Lacy finished with 11 carries for 81 yards, a 7.4-yards-per-carry average. I’m happy with the way Eddie ran before the injury. Manning was inaccurate on Sunday even when he had time.
– Green Bay will stay at home next week to take on another NFC East foe when the Dallas Cowboys visit Lambeau Field for a 3:25 p.m. contest. The Giants were only able to get a pair of field goals in that sequence. At the end of the night Clay Matthews, Nick Perry, Micah Hyde, and rookie Kyler Fackrell all registered a sack against the two time Super Bowl champion.
After ruling No. 1 cornerback Sam Shields (concussion) out early in the week, Randall (groin) was a surprise inactive 90 minutes before kickoff. Quinten Rollins and LaDarius Gunter stepped up in a big way to slow down the Giants passing attack.
Injuries took a toll on the secondary in road games at Minnesota and Green Bay, and there have been plenty of missed tackles. The offensive line was unbelievable.
The Packers are healthier on offense but it is stunning to see future Hall of Famer Rodgers completing fewer than 60% of his passes.
But a win is a win, and the Packers escaped with one – thanks largely to a defense that held the Giants in check despite playing without its top two cornerbacks – before a crowd of 78,401.
All the Eagles (3-1) needed was a field goal to stay unbeaten, but Wentz went deep on the next snap to Nelson Agholor, and Slay intercepted him with 77 seconds left, Wentz’s first turnover of his National Football League career. The Giants managed just 43 yards on 15 carries against a defense ranked first against the run coming into the night. His game-securing first-down reception in the fourth quarter came with a price, as he got crunched on the play. “We knew they’d make some catches, but limiting their playmaking abilities with the run after the catch, and I felt like we did a good job of that tonight”.
