LeBron’s foundation opens institute to aid college students
It’s a friendship for the ages, borne out of their shared rookie experiences, fortified by their Draft positions four spots apart, tested as opponents for 10 seasons, bonded forever by four years as Miami Heat teammates.
A reunion between LeBron James and Dwyane Wade could have happened this summer, but the NBA’s financial constraints (salary cap and luxury tax) made it too hard for the Cleveland Cavaliers to pull it off.
In 2014, James left the Heat for his hometown of Cleveland Cavaliers and this summer saw Wade leave for his hometown of Chicago Bulls.
These were LeBron James’ words to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin when asked about why his former teammate isn’t in a Cavs uniform with him.
“Since Coach Lue took over, it’s what Coach wants”, James said. The most notable moves Cleveland made were re-upping their key piece, LeBron James to a 3-year, $100 million deal and bolstering their bench by re-signing Richard Jefferson to a 2-year deal and James Jones re-signing a one-year veteran minimum deal of his own.
Seeing how Wade and James struggled to figure out how to play together the first year in Miami wouldn’t have compared to the issues if their point guard was just as aggressive on offense.
The LeBron James Family Foundation announced Thursday an extension of its pledge of guaranteed four-year University of Akron scholarships to the more than 1,000 Akron public school students enlisted in its “Akron I PROMISE Network”.
“Yeah”, he said. “This was a place that I wanted to play”.
“We’re putting these kids in college and getting them education, but also the success rate of graduating college is very low as well even once you get to college”, LeBron said.
To get an early glance at both teams, you can tune in on Friday night to catch all of the preseason action from the United Center. “That’s part of the business”. “I’ve always known it’s a business”. We want them to graduate from college. They heard the news of Miami being able to bring three players in. Unlike public schools, which must draw players from only the nearby community, according to state rules, private schools can recruit players from as far as 50 miles away. One is still up in the air, but an October 21 game against Olympic High School in Bremerton, Wash., looks promising. They’ll still have almost a full week between the preseason and the start of the regular season. “We are planning on playing”.
“As a basketball player, you are the CEO of a business”.
