Buffalo fans target Kaepernick for national anthem protest
The Bills offense responded with an 18-yard touchdown run by McCoy, his third of the game.
“To sit here and tell you that it didn’t affect me past year, I would be lying”, McCoy said.
Sunday’s game was the third time in McCoy’s career that he has had three touchdowns, and his first since 2011, when he led the National Football League in touchdowns. McCoy busted open a 38 yard run, and a few plays later, followed some lovely blocking on a touchdown run out of the direct snap package.
“But I had some Bills fans before the game come up and say they are supporting me, so I think it all depends on who the person is”, the quarterback continued. “Yeah, it can definitely drive you”.
McCoy is on a roll having combined for 470 yards rushing and six touchdowns (including one receiving) over his past four games. The win streak follows new offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn’s new philosophy of a run-heavy attack that mixes inside power runs along with option and Wildcat packages. The blowout score had much more to do with the 49ers’ atrocious run defense, a special teams turnover and Buffalo’s exuberance of playmakers.
On offense, meanwhile, the 49ers hoped a change at QB, with Kaepernick taking over for Blaine Gabbert, would spark something. Kaepernick completed 13 for 29 passes for 187 yards and ran for 66 additional yards.
As he has done all season, the quarterback kneeled during the United States national anthem, along with two team mates, as a police officer stood immediately behind the trio.
The 49ers purchased a $7.5 million insurance policy for Kaepernick and added an easily attainable $1 million incentive, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Instead, he overthrew an open Torrey Smith on a potential 41-yard touchdown pass.
“As a man, that is embarrassing”, 49ers linebacker Michael Wilhoite said. After pounding the ball to the 12 yard line, McCoy finished the drive with a nice 12-yard rushing touchdown – his second of the day.
Many inside the raucous crowd of 70,003 at New Era Field were chanting “U-S-A” just before Kaepernick took the field, implying that what he’s doing is un-American.
“As long as Shady’s talking, he’s fine”, Incognito said.
The Bills had four trips inside the red zone and recorded a touchdown every time.
Yet Chip Kelly wouldn’t commit to a starter next week when the 49ers face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
“I’m feeling pretty comfortable, but I still need to learn certain things”, he said.
“To be honest, I was focused on football so I really wasn’t listening to what was going on in the stands”, Kaepernick said.
After kneeling during the national anthem to continue his protest against racial oppression and police brutality, Kaepernick said he focused his attention exclusively on beating Buffalo. But San Francisco (1-5) couldn’t finish drives, settling for three field goals by Phil Dawson, in losing its fifth consecutive game. Justin Hunter, bringing in his second catch and the second touchdown as a Bill on a 30-yard strike from Tyrod Taylor in the back of the end zone. On the ensuing kickoff, Nickell Robey-Coleman forced a fumble, which was recovered by Buffalo’s Jordan Meeks. They also have 20 sacks on the season, which is one shy of their 2015 total. Taylor also rushed eight times for 68 yards. Kelly admitted after the game that defenders were in positions to make plays but didn’t.
Then other athletes – from elementary schools to professional sports teams – began following his lead.
