Ware, Smith help lead Chiefs to 26-10 over Raiders
Smith improved to 8-1 in nine career starts against the Raiders. But Carr’s magic on fourth down didn’t last as he threw the ball incomplete to Seth Roberts, turning the ball over on downs. You can also argue Reid got too cute in the third quarter, when he called two trick plays after getting first-and-goal from the Raiders’ 3.
They played lousy in offense in a loss in Houston, then relied on eight turnovers – including a pick-six – in their victory over the Jets.
The Chiefs dominated the ground game with running back Spencer Ware leading the way, and a finally-healthy Jamaal Charles contributing significantly.
Missing Latavius Murray (toe) for a second consecutive week, Oakland’s rookie running backs DeAndre Washington and Jalen Richard failed to take advantage of a Chiefs defense that entered with the fourth-worst rushing defense, combining for just 57 rushing yards. Poe caught the pass and bruised his way into the end zone, trampling a few Raiders in the process. “I’m still confident we will turn this around defensively”. Yes, the amount of rain during the afternoon would’ve turned any outdoor grass field into a mess, but this was just embarrassing. “That’s why I remain very confident in this football team and our ability to grow as the year goes on”.
Hopefully the Raiders’ jump to Las Vegas happens sooner rather than later.
Three times this season, the Raiders had done just that. The Chiefs did a nice job against Michael Crabtree, limiting him to two catches for 10 yards.
Instead, Carr was flushed and fired a floater off his back foot that was picked off by cornerback Marcus Peters, the Oakland native who now has interceptions in each of his two visits to his hometown. Poe, in the game in theory as a blocker, scored on a 1-yard touchdown run.
It wasn’t there for the Silver and Black and proved harder to sustain with the Raiders playing catch-up in the second half. The NFL record for the most receiving yards in a player’s first two seasons is 2,755 established by New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.in 2014 and 2015. Ware also had a long run of 45-yards. Common sense would tell you that between Charles, Ware, West and Smith, at least one person would be able to carry the ball one yard for the touchdown on third down. However, as reported by Chiefs’ reporter B.J. Kissel, Peters did pass concussion protocol according to Andy Reid.
But imagine for a moment that the play didn’t work. “I know that’s tough to say about a noseguard, but he’s got phenomenal hands”.
Team captain Reggie Nelson’s takeaway from this one: “We need to get better”.
Carr didn’t know exactly what went wrong offensively. He’s had over 1,000 yards over this past year, been in some tough games, ran the ball really hard for us.
The Chiefs hardly had a chance to showcase that the first four weeks of the season. “To come in here and quiet this crowd, it’s a hard thing to do”.
