Carson Wentz vs. Sam Bradford: How they stack up
With their bye week up, a wider cushion inside their division and the knowledge they are the only remaining undefeated team, the Minnesota Vikings head to the Keystone State for a matchup against the 3-2 Philadelphia Eagles, losers of their last two games.
“So when general manager Rick Spielman included Shurmur in the Vikings” think tank, it wasn”t specifically to quiz him on Bradford. Wentz, a product of North Dakota State University, would be the third option.
Just days before the start of the season, Teddy Bridgewater went down for the Vikings. Doug Pederson revealed just that on Wednesday.
“They had a little bit of a setback, and I know they’ll come out fighting this week”. I don’t want to overload him with a lot of information, a lot of new plays, a lot of new designs – this and that. “I’m grateful for the time I spent in Philadelphia and the things that I learned while I was there”. “With any game in the National Football League, if you can disrupt timing from a quarterback, I think it’s an advantage”.
Still, there seem to be little, if any, bitterness from Bradford about the way his tenure in Philadelphia ended.
“Man, this might have been one of the best practices that I’ve ever had in the National Football League coming off a bye”, cornerback Captain Munnerlyn said. “I feel like Sam, given this opportunity he’s excelled, he’s done well”.
“I was really excited to be in Philly this year. I owe it to the guys in our locker room to not try to do anything special”, Bradford said. “I could tell early on he wanted to be great, that he was committed”. But honestly, I think that stuff’s all overrrated.
“My plan was for him to sit the whole year”, Pederson said via Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Did you notice that Bennie Logan got hurt, that Fletcher Cox was playing hurt and that the safeties were playing deeper than normal because the Eagles’ best cornerback was scratched due to injury?
Both quarterbacks have fared well after the trade. So far, he has tossed six touchdowns with zero interceptions, throwing for 990 yards and completing 70 percent of his pass attempts.
The Minnesota Vikings (5-0) are coming from a bye after beating the Houston Texans, 31-13, in Week 5.
“This is the Minnesota Vikings offense and Sam”s executing it,” Shurmur said. “He’s efficient, and he’s a good athlete back there”. I saw that from him in training camp. “For him to be able to do the things he’s done, I think he’s done a great job”.
“The first thing that sticks out is that they play fast”, Wentz said. Minnesota has a defense that plays like they sold their collective souls for the ability to thoroughly dismember opposing offenses, and it shows in the numbers. Even though the Vikings are on the road we give the edge in this game to them because their defense flies around and makes plays.
Wentz will still take his shots at the long balls, because he as a player loves to sling it downfield, but what Pederson and offensive coordinator Frank Reich have done is craft an offense where Wentz’s margin for error is slim, and then Wentz hasn’t made many mistakes. His football IQ could end up giving the Vikings the edge when the two teams face off on Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field. In other words, they do pretty much everything right on defense all the time and simply challenge the opponent to beat them, which they haven’t.
After beginning his career by winning just 18 of his first 51 starts, Bradford is now 11-5 in his last 16.
