Jets rookie WR Smith breaks ribs
Jets rookie receiver Devin Smith suffered broken ribs today at training camp, and the injury was serious enough that he needed to be hospitalized.
Smith, a second-round pick in this year’s draft, was taken to a local hospital after getting hurt.
July can’t come to a close any quicker for the New York Jets. But as he landed, the back of Smith’s helmet collided with the front of safety Jaiquawn Jarrett’s helmet. In 2014 with the Buckeyes, Smith had 33 receptions for 931 yards and 12 touchdowns and finished his Ohio State career with 30 receiving touchdowns over the span of 54 games. Head coach Todd Bowles said immediately after practice he wasn’t sure of the exact nature of Smith’s injury.
The speedy Smith was projected to be an immediate contributor for the Jets, and was working with starters Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker in three-receiver sets throughout practice Friday. Smith and Jeremy Kerley are in contention for the No. 3 receiver spot.
