Singapore Galaxy Note7 users can turn in device for exchange or refund
Users have a choice between getting a replacement phone or getting a full refund. Despite Samsung’s insistence that improvements made the phones safe, reports persisted that even the improved phones were spontaneously catching fire.
Samsung also expects the drop in revenue to have a negative impact on operating profit for the next two quarters. The total loss of the company is set to bet more than $5 billion, which is a forecast Samsung had mentioned in an earlier statement.
Samsung said it will make efforts to minimize the fallout from the Note 7 termination by expanding sales of existing devices such as Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge smartphones.
“What’s important is whether the flagship S7 can fill the gap left by the Note 7, and how much trust Samsung can regain from consumers by the time the S8 comes out”, he said.
In September, the company recalled about 2.5 million Note 7 devices after complaints of overheating and exploding batteries. Earlier this week, Samsung officially ended production of the faulty phablet, and it is now offering financial incentives to USA customers in order to get all units returned (and sell more of its phones).
“The lithium-ion battery in the Galaxy Note7 smartphones can overheat and catch fire, posing serious fire and burn hazard to consumers”, the agency said in a release.
“I promise to identify the fundamental cause at any cost so that all of our customers can restore trust in Samsung’s products and use them pleasantly”, he added.
A YouTube video by Android developer news site XDA Developers, which said it received a “return kit” and instructions from Samsung, showed a fireproof box that is “forbidden for transport by aircraft” and gloves to handle the device.
In a Passenger Advisory Notice issued today, the IAA said passengers are also asked not to stow the Galaxy Note 7 in any checked-in baggage.
