Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump’s best jokes at Al Smith dinner
Trump’s reluctance to go after Michelle might stem from her popularity. Trump is an outsider businessman in a year when Americans are desperate for change, someone who promised to fund his own campaign, beholden to no one, and to prioritize jobs and economic growth while overhauling a failed bureaucracy.
The joke fell flat but rather than lighten up, Mr Trump doubled down.
“Every woman lied when they came forward to hurt my campaign”, he said.
Invigorated by both her commanding poll numbers and Trump’s eyebrow-raising declarations, the candidate vying to become America’s first female president was in OH aiming to block Trump’s efforts to claim the blue-collar heartland state. “You can’t take care of the White House or the country”, Trump said, paraphrasing a memorably harsh remark that Michelle Obama made of Clinton when she ran for the 2008 Democratic nomination against fellow senator Barack Obama.
“Here she is tonight in public pretending not to hate Catholics”, he said, to boos. Afterward, Trump told Clinton she is “tough” and “talented”.
Dolan said he led Clinton and Trump in a private prayer before the event began. “Like I said, you know, that line in a room full of predominantly Catholics, that didn’t go over very well”.
On the debate stage in Las Vegas on Wednesday, Mr Trump flatly refused, twice, to say that he would accept the results of the election.
“We have a president, all he wants to do is campaign”. “That’s horrifying”, she said.
However, the Republican candidate yesterday asserted that he will totally accept the outcome of the election if he wins but reserved his right to file a legal challenge in case of a questionable result. Trump has warned repeatedly of impending, widespread voter fraud, despite no evidence to support him and plenty of evidence to the contrary. With the November 8 elections just 19 days away, the face-off in Las Vegas was seen as the Republican nominee’s last best chance to turn around a sinking White House bid.
“It’s appropriate that people might be suspicious of their motives”, Earnest said.
I do not take much of what Mr Trump says seriously. “I don’t know. Perhaps living life high up in a tower in a world of exclusive clubs, measuring success by wins and losses, the number of zeroes in your bank account, perhaps you just develop a different set of values”, she said. “I want to earn your vote”.
The two candidates managed to sit two seats from each from each other and remain – mostly – civil on Thursday night at the white-tie Al Smith Dinner, the traditional break from attacks during every USA presidential campaign cycle, NBC News reported.
Pleasantries aside, there were still plenty of “awkward moments”, Dolan noted. “And she said, ‘Donald, whatever happens, we need to work together afterwards”‘.
