Broncos RB Anderson goes on IR after knee surgery
A full tear would nearly surely end his season, and a partial tear could mean a four- or five-week absence. Anderson tweeted after the surgery Friday morning and called it a “super success”.
“I think [Booker].is becoming more comfortable with what we’re doing”, head coach Gary Kubiak said, per Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio. At times, we stop it and it looks pretty good, but it’s too inconsistent. “Lot of people involved”.
Anderson was named the Broncos’ offensive MVP of the game but awoke the next morning in discomfort.
While Houston’s pass defense is among the best in the league, the Texans have had trouble against the run all season and rank 29th by allowing 135.4 yards rushing a game.
“We didn’t do a good job in the run support”, Texans cornerback Johnathan Joseph said.
Impressively, Anderson played three more quarters on that damaged knee, gaining 84 more yards on 14 more carries.
If the Broncos choose to move Anderson to injured reserve, he could not return to practice for six weeks and could not play in a game for eight weeks. He finished the game with 107 yards on 16 carries, his first career 100-yard rushing game before Halloween. Kubiak and general manager John Elway labeled Derby as a player who can contribute immediately, but he has had limited time to learn the playbook before Sunday’s game. It was a full-blown fix job, rather than just a trim.
“They did really well”, Kubiak said of their practice work.
With the Broncos elevating Kapri Bibbs to No. 2 tailback behind new rookie starter Devontae Booker, Thompson can take some of the special teams responsibilities away from Bibbs.
MEN IN THE MIDDLE: In a nod to Denver’s star-studded secondary, the Chargers isolated tight ends Antonio Gates and Hunter Henry on Denver’s inside LBs Brandon Marshall and Todd Davis last time, similar to what the Falcons had done with running backs Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman. The Broncos matched an $18 million offer sheet to Anderson from the Miami Dolphinsthis offseason.
This is a huge blow to Denver’s offense, which has already struggled with cohesion and consistency this season under second-year quarterback Trevor Siemian.
However it plays out, we wish C.J. a speedy recovery.
