QB Tommy Armstrong Jr. returns from helmet-to-turf collision
The latest batch, to be released at 6 p.m. time Tuesday, will look something like this: 1) Alabama; 2) Clemson; 3) MI; 4) Washington; 5) Ohio State; 6) Louisville; 7) Wisconsin; 8) Auburn; 9) Penn State; 10) Texas A&M.
Nebraska released a statement soon after Armstrong was carted off that the Husker quarterback was “briefly knocked unconscious”. The biggest and most important came when Nebraska quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr. jogged back to the sideline in the third quarter, a symbol of his improved health. He did not return to action.
Samuel was a sparkplug for OSU all night, providing most of the team’s offense with 178 total yards and two receiving touchdowns. The Huskers got neither out of it.
Damon Webb returned his first career interception 36 yards for OSU’s first touchdown on the third play of the game and Nebraska never recovered. There were completions of 32 and 26 yards by Nebraska, but when the secondary had to tighten up it did.
Meyer said he’s looking at H-back Curtis Samuel, McCall and wide receiver K.J. Hill. OSU had 34 first downs to Nebraska’s 9. 10-2 is still possible; in fact, it’s actually probable. The Buckeyes missed on two chances at scoring strikes on a drive that ended in a field goal.
ABOUT OHIO STATE (7-1, 4-1): The Buckeyes ran for 208 yards last week in the victory against Northwestern, getting a team-high 87 yards and two TDs from Mike Weber. “He’s earning more playing time”. Barrett simply missed a wide-open Mike Weber on what should have been a 21-yard score and then Binjimen Victor bobbled a strike in the end zone on what should have been an 11-yard TD. After a brief stint at the hospital, Armstrong returned to the sideline, which was a great sign for the Cornhusker faithful. The Wolverines already own a win over Penn State.
Ohio State scored 55 unanswered points.
Next Ohio State drive: A field goal to make it 24-3 with 8:22 left in the first half.
The next time the Buckeye faithful return to the Shoe will be in three weeks.
For Nebraska, this is bad news. Devine Ozigbo clearly isn’t healthy; three carries for a net loss of seven yards should cause the coaches and training staff to reassess his status. Raekwon McMillan leads the Ohio State Buckeyes with 54 tackles, Tyquan Lewis has five sacks and Malik Hooker has five interceptions. Ohio State safety Erick Smith hit Armstrong low, his legs went out from under him, and he landed on his head. Also, great to see Tommy Armstrong is OK. Purdue’s been blown out, 65-7, in the second half over the past three weeks. Armstrong only completed four of fifteen attempts, and by that point the Buckeye secondary got the job done. They are another class above the Michigan State teams that have been the biggest nemesis through Meyer’s first four seasons. Nebraska allowed 5.9 yards per carry and two rushing touchdowns but still has the 18th-ranked defense in the country, allowing 18.4 points entering this weekend’s action.
Ryker Fyfe came on in relief for the all-time leader in passing yards in Nebraska’s history. Carter was the only other Husker to haul in a pass on the night with two catches for 19 yards. On the very first play from scrimmage, Barrett threw a strike to Samuel for 75 yards and a Buckeye touchdown.
He caught eight passes for 137 yards and added 41 yards on the ground on five carries. Michigan State went to the College Football Playoff last season and now is experiencing one of the most significant drop-offs in recent memory.
