Japan, India sign civil nuclear pact

Japan and India have signed a controversial civil nuclear deal that will allow Japanese firms to export atomic technology to the South Asian state.
Friday’s accord was signed after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s meeting with his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi.
The landmark civil nuclear deal sealed today with Japan is strikingly similar to the agreements India has with the USA and some other countries but contains some added features on safety and security, reflecting Japans concerns on the issue. This is the first pact Japan has entered with a country that is not a signatory to the Non Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
Modi said FDI equity inflows have gone up by 52 per cent in the last two years and India has gone up 19 spots on the World Logistics Performance Index 2016 brought out by the World Bank.

But other nations have signed civil nuclear deals with India – including France, Australia and the United States, which inked a similar deal a decade ago.
Negotiations for the nuclear deal between the two sides have been going on for a number of years but the progress on these was halted because of political resistance in Japan after the 2011 disaster at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant.
Japan is set to participate in an upcoming Indian rapid railway system, but the scope of its role is still being negotiated.
Modi will attend the annual bilateral summit with Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe later in the day.
