Super PAC backing Cruz gets $10 million donation — News Guide
Bush can not legally coordinate with the super PAC now that he’s an official candidate, but he spent months raising money for the group. While they can’t directly take orders from the candidates they’re spending money to help elect, they still account for about $2 of every $3 raised so far in the 2016 race for president. Bush shattered fundraising records by deploying his family’s fundraising network to collect $103 million for his super PAC. Super PACs must disclose their donors, as they did Friday with hundreds of pages of filings with the Federal Election Commission.
Ted Cruz’s super PAC supports…
Bush also drew on donors supporting his rivals for the Republican presidential nomination.
And a combined $10 million went to Rick Perry’s Super PAC from Texas businessman Kelcy Warren and Arkansas businessman Darwin Deason. A constellation of four other super PACs, Keep the Promise, have elbowed out the original Cruz groups and raised $38 million. Keep the Promise II received $15 million from the billionaire Texas fracking family of Farris, Jo Ann, Daniel and Staci Wilks. The group secured $14.5 million in new commitments in July, said a person familiar with the group’s fundraising, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss details that won’t be made public for another six months.
Ansary, who has business interests in the oil industry, has long been a big donor to the Bush family, contributing heavily to George W Bush’s campaign in the 1990s. Diane Hendricks, the billionaire executive of a wholesale roofing company headquartered in Wisconsin, also wrote a $5 million check. Joe gave $100,000, his wife Marlene gave $4.9 million in contributions and their son Todd gave nearly $2,500. In recent years, Uihlein moved his packaging supply company, Uline, entirely out of Illinois and into Wisconsin because of tax incentives.
Marco Rubio’s longtime Miami mentor, Norman Braman, has reportedly been willing to send up to $10 million to his super PAC. He only raised $3.6 million total, trailing other Republicans solidly in fundraising, just as he does in the polls.
A lone local donor also is propping up the super PAC supporting former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee.
The independent group supporting Mike Huckabee raised $3.6 million.
Jeb Bush’s father, former President George H.W. Bush, gave $125,000, while his older brother, former President George W. Bush, gave $95,000.
The dollars are flowing in for Jeb Bush.
Another highlight of the Right to Rise donor list is corporate money.
San Franciscans William Oberndorf and Helen Schwab each gave about $1.5 million and 20 other people gave at least $1 million apiece.
The Louisiana governor’s sole million-dollar check comes from Gary Chouest, who owns a company that specializes in shipping.
What is perhaps most impressive about Jeb Bush’s super PAC — beyond its record-setting haul of $103 million — is how deep that support runs. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina.
Only US citizens can make contributions to political campaigns and both men have lived in the US for decades.
The group has $10.7 million on hand as of June 30.
Hedge-fund manager Bruce Berkowitz, contributed $150,000, as did tech entrepreneur Manuel D. Medina.
Ken Langone, a co-founder of Home Depot and one of the New Jersey governor’s most outspoken backers, gave $250,000 to Christie.
But most of those aligned with specific presidential candidates have already said how much they raised between January and June.
Ted Cruz’s four super PACs are designed to give donors maximum control over their donations, and Toby Neugebauer certainly has control.
Right to Rise, in a statement, said it “takes a conservative approach to FEC rules and we are in full compliance with all applicable laws and regulations”. Jeff Yass, managing director of high-frequency trading firm Susquehanna global Group, split a $2 million contribution between Purple PAC and America’s Liberty. Generation Forward, the super PAC organized to help O’Malley, raised just $289,000 in the first six months of the year. But thanks to two Texans, his presidential effort has the money to carry on.
Together, Braman, Ellison and Perlmutter gave $11 million of the $16 million raised by the group.
Numerous top donations come from donors with ties to the previous two Bush administrations, including contributions from the former presidents themselves. Bernie Sanders has bluntly said, “I will not have a super PAC”. But a filing obtained by CNN shows that he’s only in for $5 million so far. Deason made his fortune by selling Affiliated Computer Services, a data-processing company, to Xerox. That’s because they account for less than 9 percent of the total super PAC haul so far, according to an Associated Press analysis that compared money raised by formal presidential campaigns with what the super PACs say they plan to report having raised on Friday.
In addition to the Cuban-American Fernandez, major donors include Rooney Holdings, Inc., of Tulsa, Okla., which gave $2 million. Haim Saban, an entertainment executive, gave $2 million to Priorities, making him the top donor.
Rand Paul’s super PACs raised only $6 million but are funded by essentially just three donors.
