Bernie Sanders is ‘prepared to work with’ Donald Trump
Numerous factors have contributed to the election of Trump as the President of the United States, but one thing is clear: Donald Trump did not win this election – Hillary Clinton lost it. Democrats will be scrambling to assess blame to everyone, whether it be the Bernie supporters who refused to show up on election day or Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey.
On the other hand, you know, Trump ran his campaign talking about he was going to be a champion of the working class.
The question for Sanders’ supporters is what they do next.
Will Democrats resist if necessary?
SIEGEL: During the campaign, you urged Hillary Clinton to release the transcripts of her speeches to Goldman Sachs. “She’s a hawk, to the right of Obama”. If he does, it will be Republicans – not Democrats – who will enjoy a generation of electoral dominance. But what kind of change will he be offering them? That’s precisely the vote they lost in the Rust Belt and beyond.
Donna Brazile is now serving as the party’s interim chair through March 2017 after stepping in replace Debbie Wasserman Schultz in July when Wikileaks released emails showing that Democratic officials tried to help Clinton clinch the nomination, instead of playing the role of neutral arbiter in determining the nominee. Not every vote has been counted, but Clinton outperformed the president-elect by millions. For awhile many thought Hillary could pass it because she was matched against the weakest candidate imaginable.
Several candidates have emerged, including, most notably, Keith Ellison, a black and Muslim member of Congress from Minnesota, whose election to the post would be widely taken as an indicator that those demanding a leftward shift are in the ascendancy.
It is within this context that the Democratic Party is scrambling to preserve its political credibility. Obama had the same win percentage in “08 for slightly older millennials between ages 25 to 29. She had a hard time winning the support of millennials who were initially in Bernie Sanders” camp, and those who remained in the Bernie-or-bust crowd refused to see her as a candidate of the future.
Partly as a result, union membership sank from 22% of all workers when Bill Clinton was elected president to less than 12%today, and the working class lost bargaining leverage to get a share of the economy’s gains. They got nothing. They’re scared to death. Still, they have won the popular vote in six of the last seven presidential elections. If it doesn’t, it could well be looking at a strong, new progressive party to its left before the next presidential election. It was really about values: inclusiveness, respect, diversity and tolerance. Yes, secession. Apparently it is no longer the exclusive go-to implausible option of deeply conservative Americans howling at the liberal course of the country, now progressives, too, have begun dreaming about their own Shangri-La, where life is communal, organic and morally superior.
Trump talks a lot about Brexit, the nickname for Britain leaving the European Union, as an analogy for the working-class rising up against the elites and against globalization. All authors must include their name, phone number, class year and college affiliation or department to be considered for publication.
Will Washington Democrats block Trump and find new leadership?
Q: You were in the minority to think there was even a one in three shot that Donald Trump would win. They control the House. Republicans have been excellent at this.
By the midterm elections of 2010, it was clear just how powerful this movement had become.
But he said he feared the government would devolve into an oligarchy, with a small number of extremely wealthy people in control of the United States economic levers. Kirsten Gillibrand, Sen. Amy Klobuchar, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, Sen.
If the Democratic Convention had instead nominated Bernie Sanders, things could have turned out very different. And there is a middle-aged woman – angry, injured, cynical, untrusting of the entire male sex, whom she thinks consists of people who will never grow up; eternal adolescents who are fascinated by bloodshed and by violence.
