House Democrats delay leadership vote to November 30
“We need leaders who can go into these Great Lakes districts” and relate to the people there.
“We just got a shellacking last Tuesday”.
“It’s just like death. There are different stages of grief you go through, and after a defeat such as this, there are different stages we have to go through”.
For her part, Pelosi’s message to members of her caucus was to lick their wounds, learn from what happened and move forward ― united.
Pushing the date back to November 30 gives potential Pelosi challengers or candidates for other posts time to campaign among their colleagues.
At issue is whether to reinstall Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi or opt for a new leader.
Moulton said he had come to the meeting with a motion prepared to formally ask for a vote on delaying the leadership election. They are perplexed why Donald Trump won among voters who want jobs and infrastructure and opposed to the Trans Pacific Partnership trade deal.
He said Ryan has not made a decision yet. “I’m going to vote for the person who can articulate the strongest plan”.
Our new House #Republican leadership team is eager to get to work with President-elect Trump to fix America’s pressing problems. “I think that’s very healthy for us”, said Rep. Beto O’Rourke, a young lawmaker from Texas. “I think this is an attempt by a lot of people to say wait a minute, let’s take a breather, and let’s talk about strategy in the future”.
The move shows continued unrest among members about what the party should do to regroup following the stunning loss after last week’s election.
House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (Calif.) on Monday blamed Pelosi’s leadership for the Democrats’ inability to retake the chamber.
“I don’t care. I’m agnostic”.
The caucus’s No. 2 Democrat and former Pelosi rival, Minority Whip Steny Hoyer of Maryland, called for togetherness, saying “the American people expect us to be united”, according to a Democratic aide. “Then, numerous members were saying: ‘Why are you delaying the elections?’ And the press was picking that up”. That is until a private Tuesday meeting of House Democratic Caucus members with several who pushed the delay. During the Democratic caucus meeting on Tuesday, Kaptur said she told colleagues there are “certain places in the country that are missing in our leadership”.
The challenge for those clamoring for change is there is no clear alternative to Pelosi. They thought they would pick up more House seats. If the ongoing fight for chairmanship of the Democratic National Committee is any indication, it is possible more progressive and populist voices from within the caucus emerge to challenge leadership as well.
“Our caucus needs a change, but it’s not at the top”.
Ryan could also face some questions about his level of support for House Democrats, with one senior Democratic aide noting that the Ohio Democrat only paid half of the $200,000 in dues he owes the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee this cycle.
