Largest supermoon since 1948 set to light up skies tonight
However, it wasn’t all doom and gloom!
“One of the surprising things that we’ve learned about the moon from LRO is that the surface of the moon is getting churned, being overturned at a much faster rate due to new impacts we’re observing”, Dr. Petro said.
Do you have any images of the supermoon?
Failing that, the higher up you are, the better. You’ll only have to wait 18 more years. Let’s pray for clearer skies.
NASA says it won’t come that close to Earth again until november 25, 2034.
The next supermoon is not expected to be seen until 2034, according to NASA.
The moon hasn’t been this close to the earth since 1948 and won’t be again until 2034 – so for many people this will probably be the most unbelievable the moon will ever look during your lifetime.
Photographers waiting for a chance to get out and photograph another big and bright full moon need not wait long. The closest point is called the perigee and furthest point is called the apogee.
(Photo: Reuters/Enrique de la Osa) Clouds shroud the supermoon above La Compañía de Jesus Church in the historical center of Quito, Ecuador. It’s 7 percent bigger and 14 percent brighter than the average full moon.
The full moon also shone over Jakarta in Indonesia and Thailand’s Bangkok while in the Philippines, park-goers watched the spectacle in Manila.
“This supermoon is a quite regular and routine event which occurs several times a year”.
Thus, the Earth, moon and sun are all aligned with the moon as close to the Earth as possible.
The supermoon sets behind the CN tower in Toronto on Monday, Nov. 14, 2016.
To observers, it will appear about 7% larger than normal and about 15% brighter – although the human eye is barely able to discern that difference.
For Instagramming purposes, though, you might consider positioning yourself across the East River from the Manhattan waterfront (at Brooklyn Bridge Park, a pier in Williamsburg, etc.), so you can get the city’s epic skyline in there for scale.
