SP leader sparks controversy, demands RS seat for Memon’s wife
Memon was convicted for criminal conspiracy under Section 120-B of the IPC, aiding, abetting and facilitating a terrorist act, illegal possession and transportation of arms and ammunition and possessing explosives with intent to endanger lives.
The vice president of the Samajwadi Party unit in Maharashtra was quoted, as saying that Memon’s wife Raheen was in a “helpless” state, and therefore, the party should come forward to help her.
“Raheen Yakub Memon was also arrested in the Mumbai blast case but the court released her later as charges against her couldn’t be proved”.
“You (Mulayam Singh Yadav) are our leader and have always supported the needy and helpless people”.
In the letter, Ghosi has mentioned that he finds Raheen helpless and there are several people in the country who are in the similar situation. “Party disowns Ghosi’s demand”.
“He (Ghosi) has not consulted the party before making irresponsible comments”.
“We should make Raheen a Rajya Sabha MP and make her the voice of weak and helpless people”, Ghosi said.
Abu Azmi, state SP chief, sought to wash his hands off the matter.
Making a desperate attempt to capitalize on a sentiment, a leader of the Samajwadi Party has written to Mulayam Singh Yadav asking him to nominate Yakub Memon’s widow to the Rajya Sabha.
The request of Farooq Ghosi comes just two days after Yakub Memon was hanged at Nagpur Central Jail in connection with 1993 Mumbai serial blasts.
Reacting to Ghosi’s letter, Samajwadi Party General Secretary Ramgopal Yadav said on Saturday the statement made by Ghosi is “completely nonsensical”.
“Every person has the right to suggest something to his party”.
