Kaka leads MLS All-Star side to win over Tottenham
Early goals from a pair of new faces to the league this year helped send the MLS All-Stars to a 2-1 win over EPL side Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Co.
Forward Kei Kamara, midfielder Ethan Finlay and defender Waylon Francis all came on for the second half as the MLS team earned a 2-1 victory.
Tottenham Hotspur fell to the MLS All-Stars last night in Denver, Colorado 2-1 but striker Harry Kane showed that he is still one of the most lethal forwards in Europe.
“As a team we could have done better”, he said.
If Kaka put the All-Stars in the lead, Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando preserved it, making two big saves on Harry Kane before Tottenham’s young star scored on a shot in the 37th minute on which Rimando had no chance. He preserved the lead in the 73rd minute when he made a sprawling save on a point-blank attempt by Josh Onomah. Kaka was named the game’s MVP as he scored the first goal and set up David Villa for the second goal.
The 22-year-old Yedlin was acquired by Tottenham from Seattle and Major League Soccer in January.
Although both teams pressed for another goal in the second half, the scoreline remained the same when the referee blew the final whistle to give the All-Stars the win. Just one minute later, the duo of Erickson and Kane tried again, this time off of a corner kick delivered by Erickson, but Kane’s header went wide of goal. Gyasi Zardes chested down a Gonzalez long ball and dribbled just outside the the box before squaring for Clint Dempsey, who deftly touched before letting the ball run for a streaking Kaka, and Kaka slammed a low hard cross that David Villa passed right by a stunned Michel Vorm into the net.
Clint Dempsey is another former Spur and Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen is expecting a tough duel when he comes up against his former team-mate in Colorado. “It is important for them to be involved in the first team because I think they are the future of the club”. Penedo announced his departure on social media Wednesday, saying he made the decision “because of principles”. “It shows our league is growing and our players are getting better”.
BIG NAMES: The MLS has plenty of big names from overseas this season, including Brazilian star Kaka (Orlando City), Spain’s David Villa (New York City FC) and Italian midfielder/forward Sebastian Giovinco (Toronto FC). “The ‘keeper was on top form and I was delighted to see the goal go in and get the cobwebs off me”.
