If the playoff were today: Alabama-Clemson, Ohio State-Michigan in semis
The latest College Football Playoff ranking is out and despite losses this past weekend, both MI and Clemson would still be in the playoff if the season ended today. Run the table and Alabama will be the No. 1 seed in the playoff and play a CFP semifinal in the Peach Bowl in Atlanta.
So the committee’s weekly rankings, which will be released Tuesday night, are much more anticipated than in recent weeks. Clemson dropped from second to fourth with a 43-42 loss at home to Pittsburgh.
MI remained third for a third straight week, despite suffering a 14-13 loss at Iowa on Saturday night.
LSU is positioned to grab a Sugar Bowl bid. This is why USC is ranked so high despite three losses – it has two wins against teams now in the committee’s top 10.
Alabama remains No. 1 overall and the only undefeated team left in the Power Five conferences. The Westgate Las Vegas Superbook lists the Crimson Tide as the prohibitive favorite at minus-120 (risking $1.20 to win $1), the lowest price a team has reached in the regular season since the playoff was implemented three years ago.
A win over Kentucky propelled Tennessee (7-3) back into the rankings as the Vols wind up at No. 19.
For the first time since the 1985 season, the Nos. No such team has finished higher than seventh in the CFP rankings. “We control our destiny, and it wouldn’t have been any different if some of those other teams hadn’t have lost last week”, Swinney said. I am now going to turn the question over to you. While bureaucracy rarely gives us exactly what we want, we can at least state our case to put the pressure on them. There no matter who it is if they win they should get in but lose at any point and time and they are finished. I’m not saying I’m disagreeing, but it’s amusing how this thing has flipped in so many different angles and the way it went from game control, winning didn’t matter, just you didn’t control the game. MI stays in the top four at #3 while Clemson, a loser to Pittsburgh, stayed in the top four as well. 7 and 8, respectively, as the Badgers held steady while the Nittany Lions continued their climb, jumping up from tenth. Louisville is a very talented team, but only one win over a CFP top-25 team, with that being a very talented Florida State team. The Mountaineers are behind six two-loss teams and three-loss Southern Cal, with Oklahoma visiting Saturday. Utah, 13. USC, 14. The Ohio State Buckeyes and Michigan State Wolverines will play one another, and the West Virginia Mountaineers, Boise State Broncos, and Western Michigan Broncos have been consistently overlooked. The Cardinals have just one win over a ranked opponent in No. 17 Florida State, and their strength of schedule sits at No. 64 according to Sagarin.
