Clinton to urge Americans ‘not to give up’
Although Clinton received almost 800,000 more votes than Trump, according to the latest partial results, she lost in the electoral college.
Obama said distrust of elites and governing institutions had fed success in the USA election for Senator Bernie Sanders, who challenged Hillary Clinton in a drawn-out Democratic primary contest, and for Trump, a former reality TV star who bested the former secretary of state in the U.S. presidential race.
But because 26 states legally mandate that electors vote according to the rules and it is nearly unprecedented for the remaining states’ electors to disobey, there is little possibility of a Clinton presidency. “I know over the past week a lot of people have asked themselves whether America is the country we thought it was”, she said.
With more than 130 million votes counted, Clinton leads Trump by more than 1 million votes.
Trump welcomed Britain’s shock vote in June to leave the European Union and has cast doubts on the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation alliance that has guaranteed relative peace on the continent for decades.
Clinton received a loud standing ovation when she entered the stage. If anything changes after this election, it should be the understanding of how much power the public has in choosing the president.

On Tuesday, Clinton was leading the popular vote by 990,758 votes. Trump has 290 Electoral College votes and Clinton has 232, with MI still undecided. Back then, Gore beat Bush by about 540,000 votes, yet lost to Bush, 271-266, in the electoral vote.
Voters in those states didn’t have the proper opportunity to hear from either Clinton or Trump on issues.
Trump would be the first Republican to win MI in a presidential election since George H.W. Bush won the state in 1988.
Senator Boxer’s legislation would amend the Constitution of the United States and abolish the Electoral College. California has the most, with 55.
Though many are clearly hopeful that the above petition will turn out favorable, Farley said that the Electoral College is “mostly a formality” these days. She was referring to the elections in 2000 and 2016. Some opponents of the system are trying to capitalize on that aspect of the Electoral College, rather than trying to get rid of it entirely.
Four years ago, Trump called the Electoral College “a disaster”.
But Trump’s election last week subverted Obama’s top foreign policy priorities, and he seemed to have arrived in Athens in a reflective mood.
