U.S. not making change just yet
Whether from within the United States or overseas, the time is now for a new manager of the USMNT.
It is time for U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati to make a coaching change. “We’ll think about what happened today and talk to Jurgen and look at the situation”.
In the usa, the Los Angeles Times headline said: “U.S. suffers embarrassing loss to Costa Rica, in the most one-sided loss for the Americans in World Cup qualifying since 1980 – and the most one-sided shutout loss in 59 years”.
There’s plenty of time between now and the next World Cup qualifiers in March for a new coach to come in and get settled, and it just so happens that former US coach Bruce Arena, the most likely coach to come in if a change was made, is out of contract with the LA Galaxy at this point.
That humiliate loss was the final game of match day two of the 2016 for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. Whether this is a meeting about job security or just a general status update remains to be seen. Against Costa Rica, Wahl wrote, “the USA was not just beaten, but overmatched”, and wonders if the players have quit on their coach. The next year the US went 6-5-4 and got thumped by Ireland.
Said the former Germany striker: “We didn’t imagine we’d start with two defeats”.
“I think he is a natural type of choice in that you’re going to have someone come in that understands the process, understands the players, doesn’t suffer fools, is very pragmatic and doesn’t worry about aesthetics”, Lalas said. When El Tri lost a few days later in the United States, Tena was replaced within 48 hours by Victor Manuel Vucetich.
While zero points from two games makes for dismal reading, there is still ample time for the team to recover.
The top three finishers in the Concacaf round-robin tournament qualify automatically for Russian Federation, while the fourth-placed side enter a play-off. “We’ll get here some lessons but definitely it’s a bitter moment because we wanted to do far, far better than what we did”. The U.S. never really threatened offensively, and appeared to have little in the way of an organized plan.
Against Costa Rica on Tuesday his team were outplayed and fell behind shortly before halftime when Los Ticos went ahead with a soft goal. Remember, the USMNT was in a similar position at this point in World Cup Qualifying during the last World Cup cycle.
On Tuesday, the US didn’t look like a team led by a million-dollar coach.
“Was the result embarrassing? Yes”. He’s coached all over the world, including the Argentina national team, Chile, Athletic Bilbao and Marseille, and he doesn’t always rub everyone the right way. “Yes”, he said. “I’m very disappointed, obviously”.
As for the Costa Ricans, they will play Mexico on March 24 and Honduras on March 28. U.S. Soccer has been in contact with LA Galaxy boss Bruce Arena and Sporting Kansas City counterpart Peter Vermes within the past 12 months, the sources said. “It has just not been good enough this week, we all understand that and come March there is going to be the need to go after things in a strong way so we can start to put things right”. For the first time ever, the US has lost its first two matches of the Hexagonal.
