GOP senator declares US ‘reset’ with Russia unacceptable
German Chancellor Angela Merkel, left, and U.S. President Barack Obama, right, attend a bilateral meeting at the chancellery in Berlin, Thursday, Nov. 17, 2016.
The Kremlin has on numerous occasions accused the Obama administration of attempting to foment dissent in Russian Federation, and of interfering in the countries that border it, notably Ukraine.
On Tuesday, as he arrived in Greece for the first leg of his trip, Obama said Democratic and Republican administrations alike recognize the importance of the alliance to the trans-Atlantic relationship.
Throughout the campaign, the Kremlin insisted that it had no favorites and rejected the claims of interference in the USA election.
“My hope is he does not simply take a real politic approach and suggest that, you know, if we just cut some deals with Russian Federation, even if it hurts people or even if it violates worldwide norms or even if it leaves smaller countries vulnerable, or creates long-term problems in regions like Syria, that we just do whatever’s convenient at the time”, he said.
Graham, who was defeated by Trump during the primary, urged fellow Republicans to not “let allegations against a foreign government interfering in our election process go unanswered because it may have been beneficial to our cause”.
One week after Trump’s victory, Graham carried on paper a list of things he and Trump are likely to agree on: more money to deepen the Port of Charleston, lifting spending caps on the Pentagon, increasing the budget to counter Islamic State terrorism in the Middle East, and providing leverage for Trump to alter the terms of the nuclear deal with Iran.
Putin and Trump might meet after the latter’s inauguration, but there is not even an estimated date, the Kremlin spokesman added, disconfirming media gossip on the matter.
He said that Russian Federation and the United States have big differences when it came to principles of democracy, freedom of speech, rule of law, national sovereignty.
The cooperation of Russia and the US on Syria is unsatisfactory and this issue was discussed during a phone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President-elect Donald Trump earlier this week, Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said.
Other potential Trump choices for defense secretary included retired Army Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, a registered Democrat and former head of the Defense Intelligence Agency, but Flynn has now emerged as the frontrunner to become the next White House National Security Advisor, which would not require Senate confirmation.
Trump’s office said that Putin called him to “offer his congratulations on winning a historic election”.
“NATO isn’t a charity”, Cotton said.
McCain, the Arizona Republican, called Putin an untrustworthy tyrant who doesn’t deserve a bargaining session with a USA president.
“President-elect Trump will make these decisions in his own due time”, Cotton said, noting that a decision may not be made until after the Thanksgiving holiday. The Kremlin said both teams were working on setting up a face-to-face meeting.
“If you’re not serious about the job, then you probably won’t be there very long because it will expose problems”, Obama said. Obama said he’d told Putin that “there has been very clear proof that they have engaged in cyberattacks”.
“He is the leading diplomat to the country, but Congress has a role”, he said.
“The Russians have a very active and aggressive capability to conduct information operations”, James Clapper, the top USA intelligence official, told Congress on Thursday.
