Kremlin sees chance of establishing cooperation on Syria with Trump
Reportedly, Putin and Trump spoke of the need to work together in the struggle against the number one common enemy – worldwide terrorism and extremism. In contrast to many European leaders, who are hoping that some of the more outrageous promises made by Trump during the campaign will be discarded during his presidency, Putin “wished him success in implementing his campaign promises”.
The Kremlin also said that the two politicians agreed to “make provisions for a personal meeting”.
It was a sharp change in tone for Obama, who regularly mocked Trump’s candidacy in the last days before the election, even accusing the billionaire businessman and former reality television star of helping ISIL with his rhetoric about Muslims and undermining USA democracy through his claims of a “rigged” election. Obama’s relations with Putin have become tense over issues that include Syria and Ukraine.
Obama’s closest partner on the world stage, Merkel has been instrumental in Obama’s efforts to coordinate USA and European approaches toward Russian Federation, as well as other conflicts including the Syria crisis and the fight against the Islamic State group.
The outcome of the just concluded US Presidential poll may not have gone down well with half the world but Russian Federation was one of the few countries that celebrated victory of President-elect Donald Trump. This year, amid tension with Russian Federation, the Obama administration launched a NATO-centric approach to the shield in Romania that will add to defensive systems already in place in Germany, Turkey and Spain. “But for us it’s also important that we not forget our principles”. McCain, a longtime Putin foe, also has warned about Russian hackers meddling in the USA elections system. The efforts were underway before the USA election, but they were given new urgency after Trump’s surprise victory.
The two men discussed potential cooperation in Syria, where progress remains slow, Ushakov said.
Trump and Putin spoke recently by phone, and the incoming United States president also spoke Tuesday with Ukrainian leader Petro Poroshenko, a Putin foe.
Many far-right parties in Europe are celebrating the presidential victory of Donald J. Trump.
Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., a foreign policy hawk and friend of McCain’s, said he plans to hold hearings on “Russia’s misadventures throughout the world”. He said he was “certain” that Trump would live up to USA commitments.
Russian Federation has been one of the country which has followed this year’s U.S election very closely.
