Met Office warns of more rain as summer turns soggy
Poor conditions are set to continue through the night with rain and strong winds until Saturday morning, with the rest of the weekend improving for the south but more heavy showers forecast for the north-east and Scotland.
It is expected to dry up again after the coming unsettled days, and might get a bit a bit warmer, but a heatwave before the end of next week is unlikely. The Met Office said Sunday would start dry with bright spells, clouding over with rain arriving by late morning and staying cool.
“While a wet and windy period is expected, particularly in southeast England, there remain large uncertainties in the track and intensity of this low pressure system”.
Nick Prebble, a weather forecaster at MeteoGroup, said 24mm of rain had fallen in Dunkeswell, Devon, between 6am and noon.
“Many places will see 25mm (1in) of rain, but a few spots could see double this or even more”.
A weather warning is in place for heavy rain. The Met Office has said the public should be aware of disruption particularly for those taking part in outdoor activities.
Northerly winds could gust to 40-50mph here, perhaps hitting 55mph around the coast. Spray on the roads will make driving very hard during Friday evening’s rush hour in the south-east England, combining with the strong gusty winds.
“Trees are in full leaf at the moment so there is a risk that the winds could cause some damage”.
