Rep. Mike Kelly: Donald Trump Has A Mandate to ‘Implement Colossal Change’
A business tax bill would include a tax cut for US companies’ offshore earnings. Bolstering the military and border security. “This country is expecting absolutely no less”. If Republicans had cared about the American people, this nation would not have been so stagnant. Just as Republicans were able to freeze legislation during their time in the minority under President Obama, so-too will Democrats under President Trump. Then, just two days before the election, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said, essentially, “nothing to see here”. Now Clinton is gone, Warren is a de facto party leader, and top Democrats have endorsed Keith Ellison, the very liberal Minnesota Democrat who predicted Trump’s rise among Republicans, to head the Democratic National Committee.
“I think it would be good to collaborate”, he said. There are a number of Republican senators who either never endorsed Trump or unendorsed him – from conservatives like Mike Lee of Utah and Ben Sasse of Nebraska to more moderate members like John McCain and Jeff Flake of Arizona, Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan of Alaska, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Cory Gardner of Colorado, Susan Collins of Maine and Rob Portman of Ohio. “There is a voice out there that supports a counter message”.
“I think that the business tax reform is a lot easier to get done”, Moore said during his talk.
Gallup’s analysis cautions that, “It’s too early to say whether these are sustainable gains in confidence”.
Sen. Roy Blunt (R-MO) didn’t want to speculate on the future of the filibuster, but hoped Democrats would not unilaterally block Trump’s Supreme Court nominees. I’ll tell you what I won’t do.
But Republicans are divided over calls to change the Senate’s rules. And now, the remaining Democrats in the Senate are planning a strategy that benefits those voters, and takes advantage of the split between the old GOP and the Trump version. So who has the mandate: Congressional Republicans, or Trump? House Republicans were unable to rally around a resolution this year, marking the first time they were unable to agree on the fiscal outline when in power. “I suspect Donald Trump is not going to want to dealing with issues like Planned Parenthood or revisiting marriage equality”.
They’ve all since talked about working with a Trump administration.
But in general terms, Trump argues that his plans to lower corporate and individual taxes, combined with deregulation, will generate higher economic growth – and that the growth will offset most of the lost tax revenue from his proposed cuts. Tax reform is another area where Trump and Ryan are aligned, although neither of them spent much time talking about specifics.
However the Senate, while having a majority of Republicans, does not have a sufficient majority to cut off a filibuster. So McConnell just has to do that with the 52 votes he now has (or likely will following the Louisiana run-off), right?
One lawmaker on the panel, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), defended keeping the filibuster in place. One day after meeting with Trump, McConnell poured cold water on Trump’s spending plans, telling reporters that a government stimulus wasn’t going to help the economy. He’d have to push recalcitrant congressional Republicans with the threat of primary challenges, and grasp how the twists and turns of legislative process limit your choices sooner than you realize.
