Mike Trout, Kris Bryant win baseball’s MVP awards
He left conventional wisdom in the dust, too.
“Two things that I marveled at with Mookie”, Amaro said by phone this week.
While there haven’t been many, the Baseball Writers Association of America have selected players from non-playoff teams in the past, most recently in 2008 when Trout’s current teammate Albert Pujols captured the National League Award as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals.
Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
“You pinch yourself sometimes”, Trout said. The Angels’ 25-year-old outfielder, who now has two MVPs, out-distanced Betts, 356-311, with Trout receiving 10 more first-place votes (19-9).
Chicago Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant and Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout were named Thursday as winners of the 2016 Major League Baseball Most Valuable Player awards.
Betts received 17 second-place and four third-place votes.
Trout led the majors in runs scored (123), walks (116), on-base percentage (.441) and WAR (10.6).
And of course, he was also one of the league’s most feared sluggers, batting.292 with 39 homers, 102 RBI and a.939 on-base-plus-slugging percentage.
Throughout those seasons, his numbers have been fairly consistent, starting with leading the league in wins above replacement (WAR) each year, according to both Baseball-Reference and FanGraphs. The former measures how much a player’s production helped to win games and the latter how much he contributed to scoring runs. But it’s an unbelievable feeling.
He seemed genuinely overcome with emotion when he learned of his award. “But it’s all downhill from here”, he joked on a conference call with reporters. “It’s an unbelievable honor”. “But obviously, you work hard just to be in the conversation”.
“It was one of the best feelings I’ve ever felt”, Trout said.
Millville coach Roy Hallenbeck, who coached Trout in high school, was struck by his former star’s emotional reaction.
There are a lot of guys putting up years that, under different circumstances, would be MVP worthy. I don’t see that streak ending today.
Bryant contributed considerably more than one of the league’s most potent bats to the Cubs’ major league-best 103-58 record, which paved the way for their first World Series championship since 1908.
