McCrory Refuses To Concede In Tight North Carolina Governor Race
The law known as House Bill 2 prompted businesses and organizations to boycott the state and remove sporting events from it. “I think it’s a common-sense thing”.
He also ran into a roadblock on the Interstate 77 toll project. It just doesn’t typically change the outcome of a race but it might this time around.
McCrory said with all the work that’s yet to be done on this election, it’s highly likely that we won’t know the official outcome until November 18 at the earliest. Now, registrants who visited the wrong precinct in their county will have most or some of their ballot choices count. On Tuesday, N.C. voters gave an overall victory to Republicans in the state legislature, the council of state races and put N.C.’s 15 electoral college votes in Trump’s column.
“We’re going to fight for every vote between now and November 18”, McCrory reportedly told supporters in Raleigh on Tuesday night. And though Obama took Wake County by almost 56,000 votes, McCrory survived by several hundred. Richard Burr and re-elected Lt. Gov. Dan Forest – who has expressed his interest in running for governor.
Defenders of HB2 say it was meant to preserve privacy and safety for people using public restrooms and that critics of the legislation have distorted its goal for political gain. It requires transgender people to use restrooms in many public buildings corresponding to the sex on their birth certificate, and it excludes gender identity and sexual orientation from statewide anti-discrimination protections. It also is gathering information for the state board about whether hours at other locations should be extended. He said he would work to raise teacher salaries to the national average and repeal House Bill 2 to remove an obstacle to economic growth and improving North Carolina’s reputation.
Zagros Madjd-Sadjadi, a political science professor at Winston-Salem State University, considered Forsyth as a “bellwether” county in the governor’s race in terms of McCrory’s best chance of winning an urban county against Cooper.
The Southern Coalition for Social Justice said in a news release that it filed a lawsuit on behalf of Democracy North Carolina requesting an emergency action from Wake County Superior Court.
Cooper is in the lead and has declared victory but McCrory is not admitting defeat, asking that all provisional ballots be counted before it is called.
“There’s going to be a lot of ticket-splitting in those races”, said Kyle Kondik, managing editor of Sabato’s Crystal Ball at the University of Virginia Center for Politics.
Through late October, Cooper had spent $21 million to about $14 million for McCrory.
Cooper claimed victory shortly before 1 a.m.in a brief speech before jubilant Democratic supporters. Pat McCrory by 4,980 votes, which is less than 1 percent of the ballots cast.
One reason: the I-77 toll project. Pat McCrory and re-elect U.S. Sen.
A recount is expected unless the provisional count widens Cooper’s lead. That’s a swing of 22,000 votes.
The toll project is one of several controversial issues that have been mentioned since the election.
“We really did get beat up, especially in North Carolina”, Wiles said. “At the end of the day …”
