Paul Ryan renominated for House speaker position; Kevin McCarthy re-elected majority leader
The GOP voted unanimously to renominate Paul Ryan as speaker of the House, which shows that the caucus ignored Steve Bannon’s strategy to oust Ryan as enemy number one.
Newly-elected House members gather for a freshman class photo on the Capitol steps, Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2016, in Washington. He was facing a challenge from Rep. Roger Williams of Texas. Republicans will maintain control of the Senate next year, but their majority will shrink from 54 to 46 this year to 52 to 48, assuming a GOP win in a December runoff election in Louisiana.
On Tuesday, Ryan sounded chipper to work with the new administration. Republicans argue that the prohibition forfeits Congress’ power of the purse to the executive branch, a view backed by at least one member of the House GOP leadership team. “The expectation is that the speaker get in line with Donald Trump and help him get his agenda through the House and the Senate”.
Labrador is in a clear minority among House Republicans Ryan.
Ryan faces an election by the full House in January, when the new Congress convenes and will vote for Speaker.
All Democrats are expected to oppose him that day.
While we can’t be certain about anything at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue right now, Trump could surprise everybody by taking a hands-on role on Capitol Hill and immersing himself in the nitty-gritty of congressional negotiations rather than leaving that task to Ryan.
As for the other side of the aisle, House Democrats made a decision to delay their leadership elections until after Thanksgiving.
Hillary Clinton said she felt “pride and gratitude” for her campaign on Wednesday morning, hours after her shocking defeat at the hands of Donald Trump. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-California, announced Tuesday behind closed doors that leadership elections for her caucus would be postponed until after Thanksgiving on November 30. “The president is going to be judged on the results of this administration”, Ryan said of Bannon, who previously had called the speaker “the enemy”.
“Would you rather negotiate with Harry Reid and Barack Obama or with Donald Trump?” said Rep. Tom Cole (R-Okla.), chairman of an Appropriations subcommittee.
Ryan said the party needs a message that “resonates in the flyover states”.
“Welcome to the dawn of a new unified Republican government”, Ryan told reporters Tuesday. “These are things we’re working on”. A 2015 PBS documentary revealed how both Ryan and Mulvaney were at the center of the 2013-2014 La Raza-backed effort to enact Obama’s amnesty agenda. We are the same page,”said Ryan”. “A new president generally relies on the leadership”, said Norman Ornstein of the American Enterprise Institute.
“But more importantly, we’re going to make sure that the voices we heard from this election from the American people are acted upon, that we actually fix these country’s problems”.
