US House Republicans keep Paul Ryan as Speaker
Now here’s my problem: “Every member wants it autographed”, said Rep. Chris Collins, R-N.Y., who has been tapped as congressional liaison to the transition team.
Paul Ryan, the top Republican in the U.S. Congress, says he talks to Donald Trump often, but the president-elect has tapped a little-known lawmaker from western NY to be his eyes and ears among congressional Republicans. He is expected to win a floor vote to be officially reelected as Speaker on January 3, 2017, when all 435 House members cast their vote in a public roll call.
It’s unclear whether he would choose to buck Trump’s plans on the issue, and how the members of the House Republicans he leads would react.
“In stressful times, I often turn to Reince for advice”, Ryan wrote, joking that “I’m glad to say I’m still one of the very few people who know how to pronounce his name”.
Trump and Pence have more than 4,000 jobs to fill in the USA government as they prepare to assume power January 20, but their immediate focus is on filling the top diplomatic post and that of defense secretary, attorney general and Homeland Security chief.
Just a couple of years later, Bush demanded the GOP-controlled House pass the prescription drug benefit bill, despite cries by conservatives that its projected costs were drastically and artificially under-estimated.
In a vote Tuesday, Paul Ryan was was unanimously nominated to be the Speaker of the House of Representatives by Republicans in the House, a role he now fills.
Ryan faced dissension from hard-right conservatives wondering if he’ll be aggressive enough and Trump backers irked by his refusal to campaign for the GOP presidential nominee.
Ryan reportedly told House Republicans he had the backing of President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect Mike Pence.
However, Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) said he had “mixed emotions” about Ryan on Tuesday.
“We have an exciting agenda”.
The Wisconsin lawmaker won the nomination during a closed-door conference meeting at the Capitol.
Some opposition to Ryan remained. I hope they understand that business as usual is not going to work..
House Speaker Paul Ryan said Tuesday the Republican dominated government will have to go “bold” and “big” to get the country where it wants to go. But he said “the rub comes” January 3, when Ryan will need 218 votes – a majority of the full House – to be speaker and avoid a damaging setback to a career path that many think includes a presidential run.
“It’s a desire to talk about what happened, and I think that’s healthy”, said Maryland Rep. Steny Hoyer, the No. 2 Democrat in the House. For many Americans, he became a symbol of USA resolve in the fight against Islamic terrorism in the aftermath of the 2001 terrorist attacks on NY and Washington that killed almost 3,000 people.
Rep. John Mica, R-Fla., left, and Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Texas, display their “Make America Great Again” hats after attending a House Republican leadership meeting on Capitol Hill in Washington, Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2016. “Asking members to vote for a leadership team within 24 hours of their return to Washington without time to reflect on ways of coming together as a conference is truly ill-advised”. One of them, of course, is Speaker of the House Ryan. It unanimously nominated him to the speaker post after his speech. They say the shift gave too much power to the White House and unelected bureaucrats in federal agencies who now decide where to spend the money.
“The focus is really not on the speaker’s race any longer”, he said.
