Steve Bannon Rejects ‘White Nationalist’ Label: ‘I’m an Economic Nationalist’
“I call up on Mr. Trump to rescind the appointment of Mr. Bannon”.
“Your appointment of Stephen Bannon, whose ties to the White Nationalist movement have been well-documented, directly undermines your ability to unite the country”.
The full text of Cicilline’s letter to President-elect Trump is below.
House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi has called the appointment “an alarming signal” that Trump “remains committed to the hateful and divisive vision that defined his campaign”.
He said he hoped Trump “will reconsider this decision and put healing our country ahead of rewarding political extremism”.
Will Donald Trump heed the motion to revise his appointment of Stephen Bannon?
At the Republican National Convention over the summer, Bannon bragged that Breitbart was the platform for the “alt-right”, a blurry right-wing movement sometimes associated with White Nationalism.
He also said he was a strong follower of Trump’s leadership, adding that the way he speaks helped his message and to get him elected.
Reid responded to Conway’s statements, saying, “It only took five days for President-elect Trump to try to silence his critics with the threat of legal action”.
“Instead of calling on the nation to end the violence, racism and bigotry that is sweeping communities across the country, he has selected a known anti-Semitic, white nationalist, racist – Steve Bannon – to serve at the highest level of the executive branch”.
Bannon is under fire for his alleged anti-semitic comments as well as running Breitbart while the website published stories with headlines like, “Hoist It High And Proud: The Confederate Flag Proclaims A Glorious Heritage”, “Birth Control Makes Women Unattractive and insane”, and “There’s No Hiring Bias Against Women in Tech, They Just Suck at Interviews”.
White nationalists have openly and gleefully celebrated Mr. Bannon’s appointment as chief strategist, and so far Mr. Bannon has remained silent on their odious endorsements.
“A man who lost the election by 2 million votes – or more – is now the president-elect”, Reid said at the beginning of his speech on the Senate floor.
Bannon offers some reaction to the media uproar over Trump choosing him to be in the White House–phrases like “anti-Semite” and “white nationalist” most prominently come to mind–and he emphatically says, “I’m not a white nationalist, I’m a nationalist”.
