Sanders says Democrats should ‘pound away’ on popular economic issues
“I was elected as an Independent and I will finish this term as an Independent”, Sanders, who has long caucused with the Democrats, said at a breakfast hosted by the Christian Science Monitor, The Hill reported.
Sanders said he feels that message could help fix the struggling Democratic Party. “It is not good enough to have a liberal elite”, Mr. Sanders said Monday on “CBS This Morning”.
I think that the President-Elect has got to understand that numerous things that he said during the campaign, the ideas that he brought forth are terribly offensive, and frightening to millions and millions of people. Ellison officially announced he will run for DNC chairman next year and has already received numerous endorsements from top Democrats like Chuck Schumer, Harry Reid, Warren, Sanders, and others.
Before former OH state senator Nina Turner took the stage to begin emceeing duties, RoseAnn DeMoro, the executive director of National Nurses United, confessed she and the group, which organized the event, had not expected such a swift or politically confounding victory.
“Bernie Sanders is going to give a major speech on Wednesday night about the future of our country under the presidency of Donald Trump”, read the email to supporters. Sanders said he thinks the most important thing for Democrats is to figure out what to do now. No one spoke out more regularly about the widening gap between the one percent and the middle and lower classes. Sanders said his office has already gotten hundreds of calls calling for Trump to cut ties with Bannon, who has come under scrutiny for his and Breitbart News’s ties to the alt-right and the white nationalist movement. “Unfettered free trade has been a disaster for Americans workers”.
Sanders suggested that Clinton should have won the election by 10 percentage points, but declined to say whether he thought he could have defeated Trump in the general election had he defeated Clinton in the Democratic primary.
“When your team loses, everybody gets deflated, and it’s hard, and it’s challenging”, Obama said.
“Where was the Democratic Party?” he asked.
“We have better ideas, but they have to be heard for us to actually translate those ideas into votes and ultimately into action”, Obama said. But there are millions and millions of people today, working-class people, middle-class people, who are living in despair.
“There is an area where we will not compromise of one iota”.
The present wealth and level of income situation of the population of America in which the top one-tenth of one percent owns nearly equal to the bottom 90 percent is another point Mr. Sanders emphasized.
“On virtually every issue I talk about…the vast majority of the American people are on our side”.
The “People’s Rally”, organized by a number of groups that backed Sanders in the Democratic primaries, called for economic, environmental and social justice in the face of a Republican president-elect and a GOP-dominated Congress. “That is what the American people want”.
