Wash. Post: Critics Fear Sessions May Alter Civil Rights Landscape as AG
Sen. Jeff Sessions’ nomination to be attorney general under President-elect Donald Trump could have lasting implications when it comes to civil rights in the United States, critics are warning.
In the GOP primary and general-election campaign, he campaigned hard for Trump, gaining increasing influence with the nominee and the now president-elect.
Sessions, however, was accused of making racist comments in the 1980s – allegations that cost him a chance at becoming a federal judge. I think you forgot to mention in there, Mr. Blakeman, that the Senate once denied Sessions a federal judgeship for being too racist.
Pompeo, a conservative Republican congressman from Kansas, said in a statement that the chance to lead a top US intelligence agency is a call to service he can’t ignore.
“Sessions” likely nomination and confirmation by the Senate, in which he has served since 1997, is a market positive for merger and acquisition activity”, Haines wrote. Bannon’s news website has peddled conspiracy theories, white nationalism and anti-Semitism.
All three men have accepted Trump’s offer, and the announcements will be made formally later on Friday, according to the transition team member, who spoke on condition of anonymity. Williams went on to encourage those people who are frustrated by the results of the election and Trump’s appointments to “stay involved and keep pushing” and “let their voices be heard'”.
In a statement, Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus B.K. Butterfield called Sessions’ civil rights record “appalling”, saying it “should disqualify him from Senate confirmation”.
Sessions, who was the first sitting U.S. Senator to endorse Trump and who led President-Elect Donald Trump’ National Security Committee since March was picked by the president-elect to serve as Attorney General. He’s called Islam a “political ideology” and said it “definitely hides behind being a religion”.
“I don’t think there’s any question about it”, Roberts said.
From marijuana industry leaders to members of Congress to nonprofits, reactions to the choice of Sessions have been mixed, with some praising his commitment to immigration prosecution and others questioning his commitment to human rights.
Early reports suggest that Trump will make former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee the US Ambassador to Israel, a move that will signal a long-standing Trump proposition of moving the US embassy in Israel to Jerusalem. “Jeff Sessions is one of those manifestations.to be in control not only of justice in America, but really to bring injustice to America”. Jeff Sessions of Alabama to be Attorney General is stirring old memories-about his first failed foray on the national political scene.
“The torture used during that time was beyond any legal justification, it certainly was not supported by the Constitution and the full Senate Intelligence committee was only briefed on this program hours before President (George W.) Bush made it public”, said Feinstein, who called the interrogation program “ineffective” and “brutal”.
His choice to head the Department of Justice is proof that Trump meant what he said in the campaign, particularly about immigration.
“It was exacerbated by the Bush administration, which saw an opportunity to put in a new majority leader that would be more responsive to their needs”. But the former New York City mayor sounds like a downright progressive when compared with Sessions, who has spent decades openly combating civil rights. He is a staunch foe of comprehensive immigration reform that would grant many undocumented foreigners a path to citizenship, which he decries as “amnesty”. “I’ve known Schumer for many, many years”, Trump said.
“When we can agree on issues, then we’re going to work with them”, Schumer said.
