Bid to end Electoral College after Trump win
Mr Trump, busy with his transition and talks with foreign leaders, said he would have won anyway. His Democratic challenger, Hillary Clinton, whom Boxer supported, now leads by almost 1 million votes. “You know, you get 100 million votes and somebody else gets 90 million votes and you win”, CNN reported that Trump said. Mrs. Clinton conceded the race, acknowledging Mr. Trump as the victor.
Some 179 electors have not cast their vote according to their states’ wishes on 22 different occasions in USA history but no presidency has ever been changed as a result. Large states are penalized for their size, and additional votes they should receive are instead used to represent small states.
Kerwin Swint, a professor of political science at Kennesaw State University in the state of Georgia, also believes the Electoral College is likely to remain a fixture in presidential races for the foreseeable future. In his message to the president-elect, he expressed confidence that the dialogue between Moscow and Washington – in keeping with each other’s views – meets the interests of both Russian Federation and the US.
In the current flawed system, if a presidential candidate does not reach the 270-vote mark, it then falls to the U.S. House of Representatives to decide.
This year, the electors won’t vote until December 19, and they aren’t legally bound to the candidate for whom they said they’ll vote.
The Electoral College was originally set up by the founding fathers in the constitution. Once enough states ratify, electoral votes will be assigned to the victor of the popular vote, putting an end to the Electoral College.
In addition to the proposed legislation, there are several petitions floating around the Internet calling for an end to the Electoral College.
For the fifth time in American history, the president-elect did not win the popular vote. President George Bush won the presidency because of the Electoral College Votes despite Gore gaining 543,895 more votes than Bush.
While there is no constitutional provision or federal law that requires Electors to vote for the candidate that won their state, experts say it would be extremely unlikely that the Electoral College would elect a different candidate.
One petition on change.org has received nearly 4.5 million signatures, and others are growing in signatures, too. Trump’s transition to the presidency is well underway.
As Donald Trump said in 2012, “The electoral college is a disaster for a democracy”.
