Sens. McConnell and Schumer Re-Elected to Senate Leadership
With both Congress and the presidency in Republican hands, Americans and Kentuckians will be judging the results.
Across the aisle Schumer of NY was chosen as the top Democrat in the Senate for the first time, replacing Harry Reid, who will be retiring.
Chuck Schumer was easily elected by his caucus to lead Senate Democrats for the next two years and Republicans unanimously re-elected Sen.
Schumer, long expected to succeed outgoing Sen. Senator Dick Durbin remains the number two Democrat, while Senator Patty Murray was promoted to the third slot.
Senate Democrats have elected Chuck Schumer to be their new minority leader when Congress convenes in January.
Other notable members of the conference’s leadership team includes U.S. Sen.
Warren will be a vice chair of the conference and Sanders will serve as the chair of outreach.
McConnell’s Pulaski connection comes through the late Somerset Senator John Sherman Cooper, whom the current senator was an intern for and has said many times was his hero in the world of politics.
Sanders described his position as being responsible for “bringing millions of working people together, young people together, showing that government works for all of us”.
The votes come on the heels of a deeply disappointing election for Senate Democrats last week.
One problem for the Democrats is while they make the point that the economy is better off today than it was eight years ago, it has not improved for the middle class for decades, he said.
Underscoring the GOP’s openness toward Trump, Sen.
With a vote from his colleagues, Senator Schumer took on the role of senate minority leader.
He vaulted past No. 2 Senate Democratic leader Dick Durbin of IL and will lead Democrats’ last line of defense against the Trump White House and GOP-controlled House.
During the recent presidential campaign, McConnell had distanced himself from GOP nominee Donald Trump because of the mogul’s offensive comments about minorities and women, although now he has said he is prepared to work with him and move forward on the conservative legislative agenda.
According to an article from the Associated Press, McConnell is considered a popular member of the GOP and was re-elected to his position easily.
History was written in Kentucky when the republicans took control of the House, Senate and Governor’s mansion. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., who will chair the caucuses’ Policy and Communications Committee.
In what seemed like a show of independence, McConnell answered a question Wednesday about whether he backs Trump’s call for a five-year lobbying ban by former executive branch officials by saying the Senate will address “the real concerns of the American people”. A December runoff election in Louisiana will decide the final seat.
