Donald Trump And Mitt Romney To Discuss Secretary Of State Position
President-elect Donald Trump and 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney set aside a fierce rivalry on Saturday and held talks likely to feed speculation that Romney could be in line to be the new us secretary of state.
CNN also reported from a source that Romney and Trump were meeting around the same time period to discuss “governing moving forward” and a potential role for Romney in Trump’s administration, though the source did not elaborate on the particular position.
“Mitt Romney called to congratulate me on the win”, Trump wrote on Twitter.
The 2012 Republican presidential candidate had been a fierce and outspoken critic of his successor, describing him as a “phony” and a “fraud”, and urging supporters to vote for anyone else but him while the party was choosing its nominee. In addition, President Obama reportedly offered his guidance while noting that Trump seemed a little shocked at the scope of White House responsibilities.
It also comes as Trump has a jam-packed schedule Thursday and the President-elect’s team looks to tamp down reports of disarray and infighting within the transition effort, which has been slow to ramp up following Trump’s shocking upset victory last week.
Romney wished Trump the best after the election, tweeting, “May his victory speech be his guide and preserving the Republic his aim”.
The Trump-Romney meeting could at least be a chance for the two to set aside their differences from the 2016 season and forge political unity. “How are you sir”, said Romney, before shaking hands with both men.
A meeting between the two Republicans could go a long way to helping mend fences in the severely fractured Republican party.
Trump has already begun forming his national security team, selecting retired Army lieutenant general Michael Flynn as national security adviser, Alabama Sen.
He told Reuters recently that Trump’s policy advisers had discussed drafting a proposal for the president-elect’s consideration that would reinstate a national registry for visitors and immigrants from Muslim countries.
Romney – the failed 2012 Republican presidential candidate – is a long-shot possibility for secretary of state, along with former NY mayor Rudy Giuliani. Jeff Sessions as Attorney General, and Rep. Mike Pompeo, R-Kan., as his pick to lead the Central Intelligence Agency.
“Very nice!” Trump Tweeted of the exchange after.
He told Sky News: “I think it is impossible to predict what Mr Trump is thinking but this seems to be more like a media plan than a government plan”.
In a striking departure for a Republican, Trump has voiced hope for working with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has spoken warmly of the businessman-turned-world leader. Trump also met with well-known education activist Michelle Rhee and her husband, Kevin Johnson, mayor of Sacramento.
