Trump, former foe Romney meet amid speculation of possible cabinet post
Insult-swapping GOP frenemies Mitt Romney and President-elect Donald Trump met Saturday at the businessman’s New Jersey golf club as The Donald continued assembling his administration.
Actor Brandon Victor Dixon, who plays Aaron Burr, the nation’s third vice president, recited a message from the stage for his political descendant after the curtain call: “We, sir, are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents, or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights”, he said. When it comes to trade, Romney supported NAFTA in 2012 – a trade deal about which Trump has said he will renegotiate or end – and Romney also advocated for larger trade deals, according to ABC News. Neither took any questions.
There were reports the pair, who have clashed in the past, would discuss the possibility of Mr Romney becoming Secretary of State, one of the most important jobs in the White House administration.
As reported by the Associated Press, Mitt Romney in particular – the party’s 2012 presidential ticket head – insisted that Donald Trump was completely unsuitable to be the Republican candidate for president of the United States. Did he apologize at all for his harsh criticism of Trump in the months before the election? Jeff Sessions as Attorney General, and Rep. Mike Pompeo, R-Kan., as his pick to lead the Central Intelligence Agency.
Romney has also warned about Russia, blasting Russian President Vladimir Putin previous year as a “thug” as Trump expressed mutual respect for the Russian leader.
Romney was also a fierce critic of Russian Federation during his 2012 run, a move that proved prescient in recent years as Vladimir Putin consolidated his power domestically and launched a muscular foreign policy. Many of Trump’s critics have faulted his refusal to challenge Putin as a worrisome aspect of the president-elect’s embryonic foreign policy.
Trump’s NY campaign co-chair Carl Paladino has been funneling candidates for federal judgeships and prosecutor jobs to the transition team’s headquarters at Trump Tower, but he thinks Trump should keep one US attorney – Southern District’s Preet Bharara.
However, he would not be drawn on whether he had been offered a job – and ignored reporters who asked if he still thought Mr Trump was a conman. In a June interview with CNN, Romney again criticized Trump. The cast also called for Trump’s incoming administration to work on behalf of all Americans.
“It would really not so much be an insult to Donald Trump”, he said.
The Trump team statement said Trump and Vice President-elect Mike Pence were “very impressed” with Mattis.
Romney, who arrived just before 1 p.m., exited at 2:20 p.m. with Trump at his side.
Trump was quick to fire back at Romney after the former Republican nominee delivered his blistering speech earlier this year warning about the dangers of a Trump presidency.
Trump is scheduled to meet with more than a half-dozen people Saturday, including: Retired Marine Corps Gen. James N. Mattis; Center for Neighborhood Enterprise president and founder Robert L. Woodson Sr.; Chicago Cubs owner and director of the Ending Spending Super PAC Todd Ricketts; chief executive officer of CKE Restaurants Andy Puzder;and RNC finance chief Lew Eisenberg.
On Sunday, Trump will meet with Giuliani, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach. He said Trump typically began discussions by requesting assessments and contemplations, and after that choosing if a hopeful justified arrangement.
