UN climate talks end with pleas for Trump to join fight
Trump’s election has recalled the shock of 2001, when George W Bush refused to ratify the Kyoto Protocol.
The U.S. has been a leader on tackling climate change under the Obama administration, helping to build the global consensus around shared action that resulted in last year’s historic Paris Agreement.
But, it seems that this agreement will not do anything in the near future as the newly elected US President Donald Trump has promised to pull the US out of the Paris Climate Agreement and scrap all payments for United Nations global warming projects. “One of the messages from the Paris Agreement is that governments and countries need to catch up and we’re encouraging them to do so in such a way that is constructive and joined up”, Whittington said.
What will happen next is an open question, under Article 28 of the Paris Agreement it would take a total of four years for any formal withdrawal by the United States to take effect: 4 years is also the term of the US Presidency. Those that do will be better off by skipping all the downsides of a 19th century development model characterized by the burning of fossil fuels to achieve economic growth, while cashing in on more jobs, more growth and a higher quality of work and life. Beijing has already fired back at Trump’s 2012 tweet, saying climate change was a Chinese-inspired hoax aimed at harming USA business, though it also says the US remains a crucial climate diplomacy partner.
But no-one could ignore the elephant in the room.
“These negotiations’ outcome once again failed to meet the urgency of the climate crisis, but countries and social movements came together to keep pushing forward at a time when resolve is essential”.
“We made the most of the momentum of recent months and laid important foundations for swift and ambitious implementation of the Paris Agreement”.
Global warming represents a real threat towards humanity and the entire planet.
Washington was instrumental in negotiating the structure and contents of both agreements, striking tough bargains which made for often combative negotiations. And the final pillar is to mobilize non-state actors with the goal of institutionalizing their actions under the Global Climate Action Agenda.
Sir: Environmental experts have said that Pakistan is ranked amongst the top ten countries vulnerable to climate change, where weather patterns have been making major environmental impacts. We will mobilize our resources and our people.
Seen as a crucial decision for the Marrakesh talks, negotiators agreed to suspend the first meeting of the CMA – the Parties to the Agreement – until 2018 to give time for the remaining countries to ratify the treaty and allow negotiators to finalise the rules for how it will work in practice.
The 1.5-million-U.S. dollar project-funded through the Africa Solidarity Trust Fund-will focus on a variety of activities to mitigate and adapt production to changing climate conditions, and make farming practices overall more efficient.
“It is not going to be governments alone, or even principally, that solve the climate challenge”, said US Secretary of State John Kerry earlier.
“It’s the economy, stupid, but it’s the new economy”, he said, borrowing a catchphrase of former USA president Bill Clinton’s successful 1992 election campaign.
Halt federal spending on clean energy: Trump has said he wants to end federal spending on clean energy and has called efforts to develop alternative forms of “so-called green energy” from renewable sources “a big mistake”.
Although the USA elections clouded much of the talks, by the end of the week participants spoke of a renewed resolve among nations to work out the details of how the deal will be implemented and procedures to measure, report and assess the progress on their emissions goals. On November 16, more than 360 global companies and investors stated their continued support for previously agreed limits on global warming and to accelerating efforts to seize the opportunities of moving to a low-carbon economy.
