Upsets reorder group behind No. 1 Alabama
As of now, anyway.
A couple of SEC teams took the biggest falls.
Ohio State moved into second in the College Football Playoff rankings behind Alabama, with MI and Clemson still in the top four after losing for the first time this season.
OSU (8-2, 6-1 Big 12) is now ranked No. 11 in the latest CFP rankings released Tuesday.
Essentially, the committee has established Ohio State as the best team that isn’t in control of its own destiny. The hated rivals face off on November 26.
The Buckeyes (9-1), runaway winners over Maryland last Saturday, moved up from fifth to second in the latest CFP rankings as they made the most out of losses by Clemson, Michigan and Washington.
Wisconsin and Penn State followed at the seventh and eighth positions, while Oklahoma is the No. 9 team and Colorado holds the No. 10 spot.
But while Louisville has still been given a respectable ranking of No. 5, it is clear that the committee values Clemson’s head-to-head win.
Reason for concern: If the playoff were today, two Power 5 conferences would be left out. and Louisville still wouldn’t be in the top four. MI and Clemson both managed to stay in the top 5 at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively, but the two-loss Wisconsin Badgers leapt over the No. 7 Washington Huskies following their demolition of IL.
The argument behind USC’s generous ranking is simple, as the Trojans boast victories over two Top 10 squads while their losses have also come against three ranked teams.
– Arkansas beat writer Tom Murphy explains his Associated Press Top 25 ballot for Sunday, Nov. 13.
“Louisville’s been viewed as a very talented team”, Hocutt added. Now, the Huskies hope to bounce back from the loss when they host Arizona State this week. But, they still have quite a bit of quality wins under their belt. “The committee believes that Oklahoma is deserving of that 9 spot, and still looking at West Virginia to get a quality win”. The Cardinals have won five consecutive ACC games since then. Wyoming is the only team to beat Boise State.
Others receiving votes: Western Michigan, Colorado and Utah. Ohio State. Clemson and MI just shifted down with Washington falling out. Louisville 6. Washington 7. Penn State’s resume is smudged by a Week 2 loss to Pittsburgh.
Alabama, on the other hand, defeated the Mississippi State Bulldogs 51-3, according to ESPN, to reinforce that the Crimson Tide are the best team in college football after 11 weeks.
Washington (9-1), which was fourth last week, dipped to No. 7 after it lost to USC at home. Western Michigan 22. Washington State 23.
