This is how significant England’s win over South Africa is
After 11 defeats and a draw in their previous 12 meetings dating back to 2006, Eddie Jones’ men put the Springboks to the sword through tries from Jonny May, Courtney Lawes, George Ford and Owen Farrell.
That embarrassment led the Rugby Football Union to ditch Stuart Lancaster and bring in former Australia and Japan coach Jones. Daly replaced Jonathan Joseph, who has been a permanent fixture since Jones took charge after last year’s Rugby World Cup. We have to make sure we respect the conditions.
Danny Care has some work to do to get back into Jones’ starting XV.
England’s Owen Farrell goes over for a try during the rugby union worldwide between England and South Africa at Twickenham stadium in London, Saturday, Nov. 12. “We knew South Africa were going to come out hard and physical and they certainly didn’t disappoint in that regard”.
“It’s also a form of continuity because we only have five or so players carrying over from the Barbarians match so it was important to keep halfbacks Rudy Paige and Pat Lambie together as well as Francois”.
“It was far from flawless but satisfactory”, Jones told Sky Sports.
In doing so, Australia kept their grand slam tour hopes alive and Scotland were cruelly denied a famous victory that beckoned after two tries from Edinburgh-born centre Huw Jones, who made a storming first start for Scotland in his home city, and lock Jonny Gray. We always thought the first 20 minutes was going to be the most hard.
“We knew they would pick a mammoth back row”.
“We pride ourselves on our discipline and it was not good enough in the first half”.
“But we regained our composure, control”.
The Wasps second-row rarely has a bad game for either club or country and he was at his very best against South Africa’s enormous pack.
South Africa prop Vincent Kock collapsed a scrum to give Farrell an easy penalty and, in the 36th minute, England had their second try. An expectant Dylan Hartley also remarked, “We have been building for this game for a long, long time”. They lacked any invention and but for some incisive runs from Damien de Allende, showed little in attack.
“Basically my job is to make myself redundant”. “I don’t play it to be the guy who stands out in the team”.
Nobody impressed him more than Ben Youngs, unplayable in the second half as England pulled away.
“We are an ambitious team and we want to be the number one team in the world”, said Jones.
As Jones grimaced in his seat in the stand after England’s slow opening, they took the lead from a line-out which they had earned through their first penalty.
However, Jones added: “I think it’s amusing when people say this is a big physical challenge”. When you have got the speed of May outside then you can use it and, despite a courageous attempt by the covering Rudy Paige, May was in for a memorable score. “Worldwide rugby you don’t”.
Damian de Allende will partner Ventner, while South Africa, like England, have a series of injured flankers out of action, including Roelof Smit.
“There’s things we can fix. We want to write our own history”, the captain said.
“If you’re not 6ft 6 in, you get thrown out the door”.
