Majority Arrested in Portland Anti-Trump Protests Didn’t Vote
Widespread protests against Trump are continuing across the U.S. Demonstrations in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles have garnered thousands of protestors.
Through the night, flash bangs and tear gas were used to disperse protesters through the city. Of the rest, 34 were confirmed to have not voted, 35 weren’t registered to vote in OR, and 17 had yet to be confirmed one way OR the other. Trump will surely not heed their calls.
The 2016 elections saw a lower national voter turnout compared to the two most recent presidential elections, according to International Business Times. Some are questioning the legitimacy of Trump’s victory by noting that although he took the Electoral College, Clinton won the popular vote. The election system prevents any densely populated state from garnering too much power over the election process. Crowd has been advised.
Nationwide protests continued for a second night, turning destructive in some cities as thousands marched against Donald Trump’s election. At one point, police pushed protesters back and appeared to take at least one person into custody, according to footage on a local NBC affiliate.
Authorities said his wounds are not thought to be life-threatening.
Police urged people to “leave the area immediately” on Twitter. Portland’s Resistance, the group that organized the protests, disavowed the vandalism.
Protesters march up Fifth Avenue on their way to Trump Tower to protest the election. Soon after exiting the vehicle the man pulled a gun and a confrontation between the people in the auto and the protesters occurred.
The joint statement says the sheer number of arrests during protests over the last several days has been an exceptional event and the charges being “no-complainted” on Monday is not unexpected. The suspect got out of the vehicle and fired multiple shots before fleeing. In Portland, Ore., police say a man was shot on a bridge by a suspect who then fled.
Prosecutors said almost all of the protesters will receive traffic citations for failing to obey a police officer after cops said they refused orders to clear the streets. Protests elsewhere, many of which drew thousands of people, were largely peaceful, with people silently walking with encouraging signs preaching empathy for numerous groups that Trump mocked or targeted during his unusual campaign that upended political protocol yet still managed to hand him the White House.
