Dolphins spoil Goff’s debut with rally to beat Rams, 14-10
For those who missed the first three quarters of Sunday’s game between the Miami Dolphins and the Los Angeles Rams, good for you. Trailing 10-0 heading into the final quarter, the Dolphins got two fourth-quarter touchdowns, including a 9-yard pass to DeVante Parker with 36 seconds remaining. Miami left the Coliseum crowd in disbelief and barely kept alive its longest winning streak since 2008.
“We’ll worry about that some other time”, said coach Adam Gase, who was too fired up about the comeback to contemplate the negatives.
“It’s just in the game, we’ve got to learn how to finish our opponents and close them out – on defense and offense”.
The Dolphins last drove the ball for 75 yards on 7 plays before Parker’s game-winning touchdown.
Heading into the game, the big story was that the Rams were starting first overall pick Jared Goff for the first time.
That isn’t to say Goff’s debut was a masterpiece, by any means. “We had the ideal plan: Goff was doing great, the defense was playing strong, we just have to learn how to execute towards the end of the game and finish people”.
Winston threw for 331 yards to help set up four field goals by Roberto Aguayo, and hit tight end Robert Cross for a touchdown with just over six minutes left to give the Buccaneers (5-5) a cushion. After that long run, Gurley finished with just 76 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries.
Fisher said the Rams didn’t eliminate anything from the playbook because of Goff making his first start, but that Los Angeles was limited more so by Miami’s aggressive defense. With the team’s passing game stuck in neutral, running back Todd Gurley has faced stacked boxes and is mustering a disappointing 3.1 yards per carry.
Goff served as the Rams’ third-string quarterback and was inactive for the season opener.
Kicker Greg Zuerlein added to the scoreboard with a 46-yard field goal in the third quarter.
The Dolphins, according to All-Pro defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh planned to “make his first day in the office very, very, very uncomfortable”. “We did a great week, just getting myself prepared to get back for the game”. He will be at home against a Miami team that has won four straight games and is now 5-4. “It’s hard to praise any one of your players in a loss like this, but when all eyes were on our quarterback, I thought he handled this game pretty well”. “There was a light there for (Goff), so we’ll continue to allow him to get ready, continue to progress”. After throwing a bad pick earlier in the game, it looked as if he would be the reason Miami loses this game. That was, of course, until the Dolphins stepped up a few notches with the game on the line during the last minutes of the game. For a while it looked like it might be enough, but the Rams defense couldn’t keep holding on despite getting nearly nothing from the offense.
With left tackle Branden Albert (wrist) and center Mike Pouncey (hip) out, Laremy Tunsil had to slide over to replace Albert, Kraig Urbik taking over for Tunsil at guard and Anthony Steen snapping the ball.
“I felt fine”, Quinn said.
The Dolphins will host the San Francisco 49ers, while the Rams will visit the New Orleans Saints.
