Manning throw 2 TDs, Giants win fifth straight
It wasn’t pretty. It certainly wasn’t easy.
By pitching a second-half shutout at home, the New York Giants were able to improve to 7-3 on the season by beating the Chicago Bears, 22-16.
The way they have played the last four weeks has had many people both National Football League fans and fans of the New York Giants start to consider that this team is the third best NFC team, only the Seahawks and Cowboys are playing better than the Giants. The Bears fall to 2-8.
The remainder of the Bears’ inactive list are defensive back DeAndre Houston-Carson, linebacker John Timu, tight end Daniel Brown and nose tackle Eddie Goldman.
Chicago got to the NY 30 in the final two minutes but Jason Pierre-Paul had a 13-yard sack and Cutler was picked off by Collins, his fifth interception in the last four games.
“It wasn’t anything special”, said Pierre-Paul. “Just seeing everybody; saying hello to everybody; everybody coming up …” I rushed the edge and that was basically it.
Eli Manning completed 21-of-36 passes for 227 yards and two touchdowns, one to Sterling Shepard and one to Will Tye. The NFC East is tough.
Howard did drop a few passes as a receiver, something we haven’t seen from him, so there’s still room for improvement. “If you’re off just a little bit, where most times you can get away with it – today you just had to be really, really on”. “He was making some good play-action throws”.
The 6-3 Giants also have been a solid bet, going undefeated against the spread during their current win streak, covering twice as home chalk.
A bad loss that likely ends the small hopes of a playoff berth after that Vikings win isn’t about to stop McPhee or his creative rhetoric as the final seven games of the season lie ahead.
Chicago topped NY 27-21 in the teams’ last meeting three years ago, and is 3-1 SU in four games at MetLife Stadium. I think we came in prepared and ready to rush. Jay Cutler missed a chunk of the season with an injury but is back.
The veteran tight end suffered the injury when Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul stepped on his foot during a play. But once again the second half was completely different story for Chicago. With Porter out, the Bears were forced to put Sherrick McManis in the slot, and he promptly gave up a 48-yard completion to Victor Cruz. A week ago, he had a season-high 87 yards on 15 carries in a victory over Cincinnati, and most notably, helped the offense ice the game with a pair of late first-down runs. After allowing the Bears 214 yards on offense in the game’s first 30 minutes, the Giants clamped down and limited the Bears to just 101 total yards of offense in the second half.
Fourth-down conversions – The Giants responded to Chicago’s opening drive with one of their own, going 78 yards in 11 plays. The Giants are much improved on defense and risky through the air on offense but they still struggle on the ground.
The Bears early success was driven by the running game.
Of course, on the day the Bears are facing former team captain Robbie Gould, Connor Barth missed the extra point attempt. When they lost left guard Josh Sitton to an ankle injury in the third quarter, Cutler became a sitting duck. Miller led the Bears with 61 receiving yards before leaving the game in the third quarter with a broken foot. The two connected for an early touchdown on Sunday – Miller’s first score since Week 4 – but his departure leaves Chicago without many consistent pass catching options.
The Giants defense also started to show some life after a slow start to the game. FOX will have the broadcast.
