Geoff Ogilvy rocketed into a two-stroke lead by carding a flawless penultimate round at the Australian Open in Sydney, but two-time major champion Jordan Spieth remains hot on his tail.
But tournament big guns Adam Scott (-6) and Jordan Spieth (-5) are lurking.
The American, victor of the Stonehaven Cup in 2014, finished on 12-under-par for the tournament after a three-under 69 to join Australian clubhouse leaders Ashley Hall and Cameron Smith, who both shot final round 66s. “I didn’t have much confidence in my swing on the last couple of holes today in regulation and was able to calm down in-between”.
He said: “I’m in good position a couple back but I’m going to need to play better than the last two days in order to win this championship”.
Spieth’s victory follows his win at The Australian in 2014 and his runner-up showing a year ago at the same venue.
And it’s a golfing beat Australians are happy to dance along with, too.
World number five Spieth, victor of the Stonehaven Cup two years ago, managed just one birdie on his front nine but three more after the turn kept him well in contention despite a bogey after driving through the green on his penultimate hole. They might be clapping him off a victor 24 hours later, too. “I love Birkdale. I played there as an amateur in 2005, so it will be nothing new to me”. “I hit the ball well here, played a fantastic final round and went on and took that victory into my best ball-striking week I’ve ever had as a golfer at Tiger’s event in Orlando”.
“I really didn’t miss a shot and hit a lot of iron shots all over flags”.
Spieth opened with a 69 and got hot on the front nine in his second round, holing four straight birdies from the sixth to ninth. But two of the world’s top 10 are lurking heading into the weekend.
But so personable is Spieth and so intense the Sunday drama that unfolded that the lack of class in the field barely rated a mention.
And the Aussie fans already have their man anyway.
Jordan Spieth is already preparing himself for the questions when he drives down Magnolia Lane in April about that US Masters meltdown – and he might just refer the quizmaster to Royal Sydney. It’s a challenging golf course, very different golf course, but we embrace the challenge. So I mean everybody just I think wanted a fantastic finish and fortunately it was.
“I feel very confident about where things are, so yeah, off of 2014, that was a round that kind of felt like an easy 63, if that makes any sense”.
